ForewordIn December 1981, Your Public Schools began a series on theremaining one-!"oom schools in Washington state. Afterconsiderable research and a survey of the educational servicedistricts, it was determined that there were eight one-roomschools still in operation in Washington. The schools and their locations are as follow:Shaw Island Elementary, Shaw Island (San Juan County)Decatur School, Decatur Island (San Juan County)Hazelmere Elementary, Inchelium (Ferry County)Star Elementary, Connell (Franklin County)Winton Elementary, Leavenworth (Chelan County)Damman Elementary, Ellensburg (Kittitas County)Stehekin Elementary, Stehekin (Chelan County)Vernita Elementary, Vernita (Benton County)The definition that was used to determine whether or not aschool was to be included in the series required that instructionfor all students be conducted in a single room, with no physicalseparation of age groups or grade levels. There are many othersmall schools throughout the state, but they did not meet thisrestricted definition.SPI is indebted to Jean Williams of ESD 101, LouiseGustafson of ESD 123, Connie Schwarzkopf of Winton,Catherine Hardison of ESD 105, Ron Scutt of Stehekin, andMarriner Rigby and Laura Heezen of Vernita for their assistancein the preparation of the following articles. Without the help andcooperation of people in school districts and ESDs, this serieswould not have been possible.- 1 -
