Letter from
Dear friends and supporters of the NWMC,
If there was a word that summarized 2011 it would be activity. Last year
programs and participation at the Northwest Maritime Center blossomed. It was
the first year for our Spring Boating Symposium that brought together cruising
participants and instructors from all over the globe. Our maritime programs
engaged more youth than ever before and hosted school groups from as near as
Jefferson County and as far as Eugene, Oregon. In total over 11,000 people used
our meeting rooms for classes and celebration, and nearly 81% of those events
were community and mission oriented. The 35th Wooden Boat Festival was
incredible as well; we can’t take credit for the sunshine, but by all accounts it was
one of the best Festival weekends in recent memory.
For years we have worked together as a community to construct a facility
that matched our aspirations for quality programs and integrating our maritime
passions under one roof. We are pleased to write that there is maritime activity
happening here every day. Discussions have shifted from wondering what we are
going to do with all of the space to how we can schedule things so we don’t run
out of room.
If activation and engagement were our watchwords in 2011, the years ahead
will be thematically centered on continuing our work to create sustainable
programs so maritime education can thrive into the future. We haven’t yet reached
the upwind mark, but with your help we’re getting there, one tack at a time.
Thank you for your continued support of our mission and programs. Whether
your contributions involve volunteering your time, your finances, or your
goodwill, the Northwest Maritime Center truly couldn’t do it without you.
