students<strong>Coppin</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> Junior Keishan MooreHonored by the Association of FundraisingProfessionals By Jayne MatthewsKeishan Moore, a junior majoring in Nursing with a minor in Nonprofit Leadership and YouthDevelopment at <strong>Coppin</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>, was honored as one of the 2007 “Unsung Hero Award Recipients”by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She received this award from the organizationduring their National Philanthropy Day in Maryland on November 5, 2007 at the BaltimoreMarriott Waterfront Hotel.More than 900 individuals from corporate and nonprofit communities were in attendance.Ms. Moore, who serves as President of <strong>Coppin</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s American Humanics Association,received this award as a result of her leadership and involvement.American Humanics, Inc. is the only national alliance of colleges, universities, andnon-profit organizations dedicated to educating, preparing and certifying professionalsto lead nonprofit organizations. <strong>The</strong>ir motto is “Preparing the NextGeneration of Nonprofit Leaders.”“I appreciate the opportunity to increase awareness of <strong>Coppin</strong>’s AmericanHumanics program,” said Moore when asked how it felt to receive the prestigioushonor. “I am proud to be a part of American Humanics. We startedwith just three students and have grown to 50 members in a very shortperiod of time.”<strong>Coppin</strong>’s program was initiated by Dr. John Hudgins and is the firstacademic institution in Maryland to become a part of American Humanics’national organization. American Humanics nonprofit partners are a“Who’s Who” of philanthropic and service organizations. Included arethe National Urban League, the Girl Scouts, <strong>The</strong> Boy Scouts of America,Junior Achievement and the American Red Cross. <strong>The</strong>se nonprofitmembers offer internships and employ many of the American Humanicsalumni.Moore is a native Baltimorean and a graduate of Paul Laurence DunbarHigh School. She works full time for the Johns Hopkins CommunityPhysicians in the office of business operations. Hopkins pays for hernursing education at <strong>Coppin</strong> and supports Moore’s volunteer activities.In accepting the award Moore said, “I believe I was put on this earthto help people. Nothing else fulfills me like community service.”For the past 15 years, Moore has participated in the annual Bea GaddyThanksgiving Dinner. In recent years, she has been joined by her husbandDarrick and sons Darrell and Kendall who assist in the preparation of theholiday meals which are served to thousands of Baltimore residents.Moore’s other volunteer efforts include working with the James Mosher LittleLeague Baseball Association. <strong>The</strong> organization teaches baseball and sportsmanshipto 350 youngsters each year. “Our activities are designed to help boys grow intoproductive young men,” said Moore. “Organized sports are a proven way to provide apositive alternative to at-risk youth.”In addition to the James Mosher League, Moore is actively involved with the PrestonMitchum, Jr. Foundation. Founded by WMAR-TV2 cameraman Preston Mitchum, theprogram uses television programming to help young people focus on community issuesand promote career development.
