<strong>to</strong> <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Dinesh</strong> <strong>Chandra</strong> <strong>Kakati</strong><br />
On 28 th June 2008, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Dinesh</strong> <strong>Chandra</strong><br />
<strong>Kakati</strong> was presented with the<br />
prestigious global NRI award from the<br />
India International Friendship Society.<br />
The “Glory of India Award” ceremony<br />
was held at the Radison SAS Portman<br />
Hotel in the heart of the West End of<br />
Central London.<br />
The award recognizes those members<br />
of the Indian Diaspora from all around<br />
the world, who have etched their own<br />
distinct identity - socially,<br />
professionally and economically by<br />
the virtue of their own excellence.<br />
These individuals have been proactive<br />
and instrumental in strengthening<br />
Indo-British ties and encouraging<br />
foreign investment in Indian projects<br />
and thus contributing <strong>to</strong> the economic<br />
growth of India.<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kakati</strong> was recognised for his<br />
outstanding career, spanning 42 years<br />
thus far, in medical science in both<br />
India and the UK. His brilliant<br />
academic career including research<br />
and teaching at the University of<br />
Cambridge and the University of<br />
London, was cited by the award<br />
committee. In addition, <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kakati</strong>’s<br />
many community and philanthropic<br />
works were recognised. These include<br />
his highly respected and<br />
distinguished work in establishing the<br />
St. George’s Day Hospital, a renowned<br />
rehabilitation centre for the local<br />
elderly community in London.<br />
<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kakati</strong> was also acclaimed for his<br />
tireless work in recognizing and<br />
preserving the memory of Shrimanta<br />
Sankardev in the UK over the last 25<br />
years. These celebrations are now a<br />
fully established annual fixture on the<br />
Assamese cultural calendar in the UK,<br />
helping <strong>to</strong> educate young and old<br />
alike in the life and times of the great<br />
Indian Saint. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kakati</strong>’s current<br />
activities include taking an active role<br />
within a Hindu cultural society,<br />
leading <strong>to</strong> the<br />
construction of the<br />
first Hindu Temple in<br />
his region.<br />
The awards at this 28th<br />
Friendship Banquet<br />
held in London, were<br />
attended by distinguished dignitaries<br />
from around the world, including the<br />
award presenters invited as guests of<br />
honour. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Kakati</strong> was bes<strong>to</strong>wed his<br />
award by <strong>Dr</strong>. Bhisham Narain Singh<br />
