Eagleton Institute of PoliticsPolitical Campaigning CourseThe Eagleton Institute, in collaboration withthe Department of Political Science, offersPolitical Campaigning, a popular fall-semesterundergraduate course. In fall 2009, withNew Jersey one of only two states holdinggubernatorial elections, the course was taughtfor the first time by two key players in thathotly contested contest: Mike DuHaime, thetop consultant to former U.S. Attorney (nowGovernor) Chris Christie, and Maggie Moran,campaign manager for then-Governor JonCorzine.The course, which always uses current campaignsto illustrate central concepts aboutpolitical strategies and tactics, took on addedexcitement because the students had access toinsider views of the campaign in progress as wellas the opportunity to see their teachers worktogether and treat each other with respect andgood humor despite strong political differences.EXAMINING TWO SIDES OF EVERY ISSUE: A NEWOPPORTUNITY FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCHLongtime friends andsupporters of the InstituteJohn and Ann Holt havemade a generous gift toestablish a new opportunityfor undergraduate researchat Eagleton. The Johnand Ann Holt EndowedUndergraduate AppliedResearch Fund in American Politics will provide annualsupport for a Rutgers junior or senior to conduct research onan issue of contemporary significance in applied Americanpolitics. In keeping with Eagleton’s bi-partisan approach tothe study of politics, award recipients will be encouragedto examine all sides of the political debate on their topics,exploring varied partisan analyses. We thank the Holts forenhancing the academic experiences of our undergraduates bycreating this unique and timely student research program.DuHaime and Moran brought to class key players on the state’s political stage, including officeholders andoperatives, who offered valuable frontline insights.
