Center NewsThe Center for Applied Research in Human DevelopmentThe Center for Applied Research in Human Development welcomed a new graduate research assistant to the Center’s staffthis fall. Doctoral student Marisol Garcia joined Iva Kosutic, Jess Sanderson, and Kristi Palmer to work on a number ofcurrent evaluation projects with state and community organizations. Active projects include an evaluation of the UConnGaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR-UP) in New Haven, Connecticut; an evaluationof innovative strategies being implemented to improve school attendance in four Connecticut public school districts; analysisof Connecticut’s Juvenile Justice database to assist state planners in implementing changes passed by the State Legislatureon how to treat juveniles in the system, and ongoing efforts to assist the State Department of Education in developing qualitystandards for Connecticut after school programs.The Center for the Study of Culture, Health, and Human DevelopmentThe Center for the Study of Culture, Health, and Human Development (CHHD) had a professionally active summer. First,Professors Sara Harkness and Charles M. Super gave invited presentations at a conference in Padua, Italy, that was held inmemory of Professor Giovanna (Vanna) Axia. Vanna Axia was an international member of the CHHD and co-authoredmultiple publications from the Center’s “International Study of Parents, Children, and Schools” and the “International BabyStudy.” Several of her advanced students were involved with these projects as well, and two of them came to UConn forextended periods of collaboration with Professors Harkness and Super, and with Associate Professor Preston Britner.Vanna will be sorely missed by many.More happily, CHHD faculty and students presented a symposium at the biannual meeting of the International Societyfor the Study of Behavioral Development, in Würzburg, Germany. The symposium, co-organized with Ughetta Moscardino,another international member of the CHHD, was titled The cultural organization of daily activities of infants and their mothers:Implications for self-regulation and well-being, and included five presentations (see page 5).Later in the summer, Professors Harkness and Super presented an invited “State-of-the-Art” lecture at the biannualmeetings of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology, in Bremen, Germany.The Ronald and Nancy Rohner Center for the Study of InterpersonalAcceptance and RejectionProfessor Emeritus and Director of the Rohner Center, Ronald P. Rohner, receivedthe American Psychological Association (APA) Division 52 Award for OutstandingInternational Psychologist from the United States for 2008. International scholarRamadan Ahmed received the Award for Outstanding International Psychologistoutside the U.S. for 2008. Professor Ahmed is the Regional Representative for NorthAfrica and the Middle East for the International Society for Interpersonal Acceptanceand Rejection (ISIPAR); Professor Rohner is Executive Director and Past President ofthe Society.Pictured left to right: RamadanAhmed, and Ronald Rohner.7
