RetirementsUneighbors is a free crime prevention program for allresidents of Indian River County.Over 40,000 residents within Indian River County haveregistered for this free program that connects local residentsand law enforcement agencies through new technologiesto fight crime. These new technologies combinedwith a community infrastructure of home ownersassociations, groups, organizations and communityleaders are changing the way the public and law enforcementwork together to stay ahead of criminal activity.The foundation of the Uneighbors program providesresidents the ability to alert their neighbors on their mobilephones, e-mail or by automated phone calls for anytype of criminal activity in the area. The alerts can besent anonymously from local residents to all participatingneighbors, while immediately notifying the policedepartment.The Vero Beach Police Department has the ability torespond to each alert, expand the alert to adjacent communities,and include vital information related to thecontent of the alert. The Uneighbors program also allowsthe Vero Beach Police Department to initiate alertsand direct them to a specific neighborhood or countywide.In addition, each resident at the time of registering isprovided the location of all registered sex offenders thatare living within a 1-mile radius of their residence, ifnewly registered sex offenders should move into theirneighborhood after enrolling in the Uneighbors program,they are alerted with the updated information.The alert and notification program also allows all registeredusers the ability to alert neighbors to missing personsor a lost pet.Uneighbors provides these valuable services to residentsand law enforcement free of charge through sponsorshipof selected business partners. Uneighbors includeseach partner in all aspects of the program, educatingall residents on the businesses that make it possibleto provide the program at no cost.
