6 Create coherence Tools creating a good overview The first step when you want to produce some goods is to buy some raw materials, develop and produce the goods, pay the employees, stock the goods, transport, distribute and market it. All these activities create value for the company and are linked together. Students of the Value Chain Management Programme learn to look at them from an overall perspective. An example is that it is not very smart to find a raw material whose unit price is DKK 2.00 lower if it increases the price by DKK 4.00 in transport costs to get the raw material to its destination or if the production process is prolonged. Naturally, the processes have to be optimised. In comparison with other traditional business educations, the Value Chain Management education differs by not focusing that much on economics, budgeting and accounting, although we do work with these areas. In return, the programme goes more into depth with topics such as cost theory, international finan- optimized, but that you have a good overview of the complex relations of the entire “value chain” in order to optimise it. These value chains or networks of processes stretch out through companies, their subsidiaries, collaborative partners and suppliers, so they are found both externally and internally in companies. The aim of the Value Chain Management Pro- gramme is thus to provide our students with tools to give them a good overview of these networks of processes. cing and logistics, whereas topics such as strategy/or- ganization, marketing and investment are at the same level as in other business educations. The Value Chain Management programme also differs from other programmes in the linking between the commercial and technical knowledge. The principle is that you should also be familiar with the technical part of a production to be able to weight the production correctly in the overall chain of processes. Another important element in the programme is that each semester ends up with a project which is made in collaboration with a company. Working with theo- ries in “real life” makes them much more realistic.
Understanding of the whole value chain Logistics is exciting Already when she attended a commercial school, Ma- ria Bæk Nielsen got interested in logistics and process optimization. “I found the subject to be so exciting that I started investigating where I could learn more about logistics. I found out that it was possible at the BA (Business Economics) programme and after that the MA (Business Economics) programme, but then I came across a description of the Value Chain Manage- ment programme in the Coordinated Enrolment. That programme seemed to be the right thing for me. That way I would not have to go through so many and long studies until I got to the topics that were of real interest to me. Maria Bæk Nielsen proved right in her assumptions. She has now one year left of the Value Chain Manage- ment Programme and has just finished a practical placement with HTH (kitchen manufacturer) in Ølgod. “The Value Chain Management Programme is defi- nitely the right programme for me. We work with a lot of practical examples in the learning process, and in that way we are taught to see the connection between theory and practice. Besides, we are challen- ged to test our knowledge through projects in trade and industry. The effect of the projects is that I have confidence in what I have learned, and by working in real life, I become aware of new ways of presenting a problem. I appreciate that the education is so diverse that you get an understanding of the entire value chain and are able to familiarize yourself with all the processes,” says Maria Bæk Nielsen. An exciting thing about this area is, according to Maria Bæk Nielsen, that it never stops developing Maria, 6 th semester student and that new production philosophies are developed all the time. At the same time it is a challenge that you can never stop improving a process as there will always be even smarter ways of doing things. In her practical placement at HTH Maria Bæk Nielsen has worked with the optimisation of the internal value chain. The headlines are product planning, mini- mization of storage, shorter turnaround time etc. When asked about her dream job, Maria Bæk Nielsen says that after a few years’ experience she can visua- lize herself as the production manager of a major international company. What is made in the production is of little importance. The challenges lie in the logistics and optimization. “We are much sought after in trade and industry. We simply have the competencies the companies need.” 7
