<strong>Pure</strong> <strong><strong>Catskill</strong>s</strong> <strong>Wood</strong> <strong>Products</strong> is a directory for producers, suppliers, architects, designers and otherbuyers to connect with wood products businesses and related industry resources in the <strong>Catskill</strong> Mountain Region. Bysourcing producers through this directory, buyers are promoting a working landscape of well-managed forests and athriving forest-based economy that protects the largest surface water supply system in the United States – the New YorkCity Watershed.Our “Green” is Blue.Forests cover 75% of the <strong>Catskill</strong> Region and provide a natural filter forstreams and reservoirs that supply 1.3 billion gallons of fresh drinkingwater to over 90% of New York City homes every day. <strong>Catskill</strong> forests aredominated by a rich diversity of hardwoods includingsugar maple, red maple, black cherry, white ash, yellowbirch and red oak. Softwoods such as white pine, Easternhemlock and Eastern red cedar also grow in several areasthroughout the region.Presently, 85% of the region’s forestland is inprivate ownership. Therefore, landowners are encouraged to steward their land in ways that protect the watershed.Compared to regions of similar size, family-forest owners in the <strong><strong>Catskill</strong>s</strong> are following the guidance of a long-termforest stewardship plan at a rate over five times the national average. New York City-owned lands and state-managedforests independently certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) alsocontribute to the overall wood resource.
