Nice peopleare the ones who don’t get upset often, are generally kind and don’t make a lotof waves. That’s nice. It’s important to benice. However, if you want to make friends,it’s also important to go a little outside ofyour shell and be outgoing. This meansintroducing yourself to strangers at partiesor gatherings, meeting people, being socialand being lively. Flash a smile every nowand then, even when there’s no apparentreason to smile, and be sure to give sincere, specific compliments.Making Friends 101Be YourselfWhile there is often a temptation tofollow the crowd in order to fit in, there isnothing worse than a phony. Eventuallyyour true side will come out (or at least itshould!), so why waste time wearing a maskas a cover-up? By showing your personalityand your feelings, you are bound to attractfriends who think and act like you do.Anyone who deserves your respect willrespect others who are simply themselves, rather than putting up a front. Be sure tofind those who have similar ideals as you.You don’t need to have exactly the samehobbies or interests, but it is crucial to findcommon personality traits in your potentialbest buddies.Don’t discriminateYou know the kind. They take one look atyou and decide you’re not good enough to bein their unofficial socializing club. You wishyou could be accepted, but you feel as thoughyou’re an outsider. These are the people whoact like they are better than you. They’re not,so don’t be one of them.In your efforts to accept others, rememberit’s not always the first impression thatcounts, or the way someone appears on theoutside—it’s about giving your friendship tothat person and appreciating their reciprocation.Be a good listenerTalking is good, but you know the saying,“talk is cheap.” To be a friend, you have tolisten. I once heard a speaker at a leadershipseminar say that maybe God gave us two earsand one mouth because we’re supposed tolisten twice as much as we talk. While thatstatement may not be entirely correct—ormathematically sound—it teaches an importantlesson: a good friend is a good listener.Making subtle comments about the topic ofconversation will let your friend know you arepaying attention. When you show someoneyou really are connected to what they say andfeel, they are much more likely to see you assomeone who cares—someone who is a truefriend.By Sam ScorupEVERY FRIDAY & SATURDAY NIGHT8:00 & 10:15$10 at the door / $8 in advance** Starving Student cards may only be used at the door or inperson with a pre-paid reservation.
