BAE Land Systems M777 155mm lightweight towed howitzer is being offered<br />
to meet <strong>the</strong> Indian Army’s requirement for additional field guns.<br />
Most dominant in Hall 8 was <strong>the</strong><br />
M777 155mm howitzer which remains <strong>the</strong><br />
subject of ongoing discussions between<br />
<strong>the</strong> Indian and US Governments in relation<br />
to a possible sale to <strong>the</strong> Indian Army.<br />
‘Mobility’ was a dominant <strong>the</strong>me at BAE<br />
Systems’ displays at Defexpo 2012, which<br />
marked <strong>the</strong> debut of its family of CV90<br />
LightTanks and BVs10 ‘go-anywhere’<br />
All-Terrain Vehicle family in India along<br />
with <strong>the</strong> ultra-light M777 howitzer. The<br />
BAE Systems’ pavilion at Defexpo spanned<br />
products and solutions in Air and <strong>Defence</strong><br />
Information, Maritime, Intelligence and<br />
Security, and Electronics Systems.<br />
The many hues of<br />
Finmeccanica<br />
Finmeccanica through its companies<br />
AgustaWestland, Alenia Aermacchi,<br />
DRS Tactical Systems, Inc. (a division of<br />
DRS Technologies), Selex Galileo, Oto<br />
Melara and WASS, exhibited a vast range<br />
of products, platforms and technological<br />
solutions in <strong>the</strong> field of helicopters,<br />
aeronautics, radar systems, naval and land<br />
armaments and underwater systems at<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir stand in Hall 18. For Finmeccanica,<br />
“India is a market of great strategic<br />
importance, where it can establish longterm<br />
partnerships involving <strong>the</strong> mutual<br />
exchange of technology and expertise.<br />
The establishment of <strong>the</strong> Group’s offices<br />
in India clearly represents <strong>the</strong> company’s<br />
increasing interest in <strong>the</strong> country and a<br />
step forward in <strong>the</strong> Group’s relations with<br />
local partners”.<br />
In 2010, <strong>the</strong> company was awarded <strong>the</strong><br />
tender to supply 12 AW101 helicopters<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Indian Air Force for State VIP<br />
transportation. As for present and future<br />
needs, “AgustaWestland is able to<br />
meet <strong>the</strong> requirements for both land<br />
and sea missions, proposing models<br />
such as <strong>the</strong> AW119, AW109 LUH,<br />
AW139, NH9O and AW101”. In March<br />
2012 Indian Rotorcraft Limited, a joint<br />
venture between AgustaWestland and<br />
Tata Sons, began construction on a<br />
new helicopter production facility in<br />
Hyderabad which will be completed in<br />
mid-2013, marking a new development<br />
in <strong>the</strong> Indian aerospace industry. At<br />
Defexpo 2012, AgustaWestland exhibited<br />
its range of modern military helicopters<br />
including <strong>the</strong> AW101, <strong>the</strong> AW119Ke, <strong>the</strong><br />
AW109LUH, <strong>the</strong> AWl39 Coast Guard,<br />
<strong>the</strong> naval version of <strong>the</strong> NH90.<br />
Alenia Aermacchi are currently<br />
following <strong>the</strong> requirements of <strong>the</strong> Indian<br />
Air Force for a tactical transport aircraft<br />
and <strong>the</strong> Indian Coast Guard for maritime<br />
patrol aircraft. The C-27J, tactical<br />
transport aircraft manufactured <strong>by</strong> Alenia<br />
Aermacdhi, with its special characteristics,<br />
“represents an excellent solution for <strong>the</strong><br />
Indian Air Force’s requirements”.<br />
SELEX Galileo has expanded its<br />
footprint in India and exhibited its<br />
Electronic Warfare (EW) products such<br />
as <strong>the</strong> Aircraft Gateway Processor (AGP)<br />
which is now part of <strong>the</strong> standard fit on<br />
<strong>the</strong> Apache AH-64, <strong>the</strong> next-generation<br />
ELINT system SAGE to meet <strong>the</strong> needs<br />
of India’s Rustom-2 MALE UAS and<br />
<strong>the</strong> SEER Radar Warning Receiver for<br />
<strong>the</strong> IAF’s Hawk AJT, among many o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
products.<br />

Finmeccanica had a large presence at <strong>the</strong> show, with a number of products<br />
on display at <strong>the</strong>ir stand.<br />
The French at Pragati Maidan<br />
Thales demonstrated its capabilities in<br />
<strong>the</strong> area of Global Air <strong>Defence</strong> Solutions,<br />
Force Protection, Missile Systems and<br />
Rocket Systems, showcasing <strong>the</strong> Shikra<br />
60 (<strong>the</strong> tactical C2 to ensure a complete<br />
airspace surveillance of up to a range<br />
of 80 km and heterogeneous weapon<br />
systems coordination), ADES (<strong>the</strong><br />
ultimate all-in-one mobile short range<br />
air defence system), Gun System (<strong>the</strong><br />
latest generation air defence gun to defeat<br />
emerging low-cost targets), SAMP/T (<strong>the</strong><br />
European, in- service, medium range air<br />
& missile defence solution), LMM (<strong>the</strong><br />
new family of lightweight multi-role<br />
missiles) and Laser Guided Rocket in<br />
70mm calibre.<br />
As <strong>Vayu</strong> was briefed, “Thales develops a<br />
comprehensive range ofoptronic equipment<br />
aimed at evaluating critical situations at a<br />
tactical and strategic level. “Thales is <strong>the</strong><br />
European leader in night vision systems,<br />
whose equipment are used <strong>by</strong> tactical<br />
units, special forces and aircraft and<br />
helicopter pilots”. At <strong>the</strong> Thales stand, were<br />
exhibited: Ca<strong>the</strong>rine XP, a Compact highperformance<br />
<strong>the</strong>rmal imager, Sophie XF,<br />
a multifunction hand-held <strong>the</strong>rmal imager<br />
with continuous optical zoom, Helie,<br />
Helicopter Light Intensified equipment and<br />
Damocles, a 3rd Generation multi- function<br />
Targeting pod.<br />
Speaking with Sagem’s representative<br />
at Defexpo 2012, <strong>Vayu</strong> was informed<br />
that <strong>the</strong> British Ministry of <strong>Defence</strong><br />
has awarded Sagem (Safran Group) a<br />
