Nature of Death Murder-SuicidesIn this c<strong>on</strong>text, we use the term “murder-suicide” in reference to cases in which aperpetrator kills his partner/spouse and then kills himself. We refer to cases in which anintimate partner murders another and the children and then proceeds to kill him or herselfas “familicide.” 2 According to the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Institute of Justice, comm<strong>on</strong> risk factors inthese cases are:• Prior history of family violence• Access to a gun• Threats, especially increased threats with increased specificity• Prior history of poor mental health or substance abuse, especially alcoholThe 2009 data dem<strong>on</strong>strates that in 38 percent of the family violence murders in this report,the perpetrator killed himself after killing his partner.
