Why?
It is no secret that the ICT sector is one of the main growth
areas in Ireland at present. With some of the world’s
largest multinational ICT corporations, operating their
European headquarters in Ireland such as: Microsoft
Ireland, Google, Facebook, Twitter, AOL, IBM, INTEL,
and with a consistently reported demand for Science,
Technology, and Computing graduates, there is an
increased demand for higher education and training
for Computing programmes. Many ICT companies are
reporting a shortage of Computing qualified graduates in
Ireland.
All of the latest Forfas, FAS, ESRI, and IDA reports point
to the shortage of ICT skilled graduates qualifying from
higher education institutions in Ireland, especially when
there continues to be jobs and career pathways available
in Ireland. Many secondary school students have no
exposure to Computer Science modules or learning
at second-level in Ireland, and they can have false
expectancies and get a shock in first year at third-level in
relation to some of the fundamental subjects involved in
Computer Science. Indeed some of the Irish Universities
and other Higher Education Institutes in Ireland, report a
general drop-out rate of 42% after year 1 of a Bachelors
in Computing programme. CCT believes that there is a
requirement at secondary level in Ireland for Computing
and Information Technology courses, to help prepare
interested students who want to pursue higher education
programmes in the field of Computing and Information
Technology.
