2008 Consumer’s Guide to Diabetes Products KETONE TEST STRIPS IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, you may from time to time have high blood glucose levels and your body will break down fat as a source of energy.This produces by-products known as ketones.An excessive amount of ketones when there is not enough insulin available may cause a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The symptoms of DKA are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and dehydration, and the blood becomes acidic. Another symptom of DKA is fruity-smelling breath. Untreated, DKA can lead to a coma and even death. People with type 2 diabetes should also test for ketones during an acute illness.The most accurate way of measuring ketone levels is to use a blood glucose meter that measures beta-hydroxybutyric acid, a type of ketone. (Currently, the Precision Xtra is the only blood glucose meter that also measures ketones; see page 9.) Many people check ketone levels in their urine using urine test strips. Discuss ketone testing with your diabetes healthcare provider.
