The <strong>Airlift</strong>/<strong>Tanker</strong> <strong>Association</strong> Specialized Mission Awardis presented annually to an outstanding individual whoseperformance of duties in support of an aerial air mobility mission isexceptionally noteworthy during crises, contingencies, orhumanitarian airlift. This award is presented to careerfields not covered by the Huyser Award categories.2009 A/TASpecialized Mission AwardTechnical Sergeant Steven A. GuillenTechnical Sergeant Steven A. Guillen is an Aeromedical EvacuationTechnician Flight Evaluator with the 43rd Aeromedical EvacuationSquadron, Pope AFB, North Carolina. He enteredthe Air Force in September 1994 and hasserved in a variety of Air Force Medical Servicepositions to include Emergency De<strong>part</strong>ment,Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Education andTraining. TSgt Guillen is a non-rated aircrewmember with more than 700 flying hours in theC-130, KC-135, C-17, C-21, and HH-60 aircraft.As a member of the largest active-dutyaeromedical evacuation squadron in the AirForce, his mission is to deploy a combat-readytheater aeromedical evacuation system to a forwardbattle area and facilitate movement of sickor wounded service members via C-130 Herculesor any other opportune or retrograde aircraft. Asan evaluator, TSgt Guillen provides guidance inthe implementation and support of regulations,directives, and policies to all crew members atthe 43 AES.Today, members of the unit are deployedworldwide as they provide the vital link in aeromedical evacuationsupporting the armed forces fight in the Global War on Terrorism.TSgt Guillen has also deployed as 1 of only 23 Air Force medics toserve in a rotary wing medical evacuation unit in support of OperationsEnduring Freedom; flying 104 combat sorties under fire.TSgt Guillen has an extensive educational history including graduatingfrom Medical Service Technical School, Sheppard AFB, Texasin 1994; the Emergency Medical Dispatchers Course, Yuba City College,California in 1995; the Pre-Hosptial Trauma Life Support-InstructorCourse, San Antonio, Texas, in 1997;Certified Nurse’s Assistant Course, San AntonioCollege, Texas, in 1999; Airmen LeadershipSchool, Lackland AFB, Texas, in 2001; theTexas Paramedic Course, San Antonio College,San Antonio, Texas, in 2001; the AeromedicalEvacuation Technician Course, Brooks AFB, SanAntonio, Texas, in 2005; the Survival, Evasion,Resistance, and Escape Course, Fairchild AFB,Washington, in 2008; and, the Parachute WaterSurvival Training, Pensacola Naval Air Station,Florida, also in 2008.TSgt Guillen was awarded the 200 I OutstandingCommunity Volunteer of the Year Award forwork on local projects while assigned to the SanAntonio Search and Rescue Unit, San Antonio,Texas.TSgt Guillen’s prior awards and achievementsinclude being named the 2000 OutstandingMedical Technician of the Quarter, WilfordHall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, Texas and the 2002 NCO ofthe Quarter, 435th Medical Squadron, Landstuhl Regional MedicalCenter, Germany.
