silk armor is PD 2, DR 40. $3,000, 2.5 lbs. for a vest; $7,500, 6 lbs. for a full suit. Heavy spider silk armor isPD 2, DR 60. $4,000, 3.5 lbs. for a vest; $10,000, 8 lbs. for a full suit.A Footnote about MonocrysThe strange thing about monocrys armor (TL 8) is that while it is not significantly better than Kevlar (firstcommercial Kevlar body armor appeared in 1972) and even inferior to Spectra armor (late TL 7, 1988+), it isstill more fashionable to wear a "two-phase, single crystal metallic fiber". Either good marketing sells anythingor monocrys is more flexible, trading protection for freedom of movement.Look at the old Second Chance Standard (Kevlar) vest from p. B211: It gives DR 14 at 2.5 lbs. A vest ofmedium monocrys gives you DR 16 but weighs twice as much as the Kevlar vest (5 lbs.) and costs three timesas much. The Second Chance Hardcorps system (without inserts) has also DR 16 and weighs, including pocketsfor inserts and attachment points for other equipment, only one pound more than the monocrys vest but is 30%cheaper.SPECS Eye Protection (TL 7)The Special Protective Eyewear, Cylindrical System (SPECS) (TL 7) consists of a lens carrying browbar, interchangeable spatula and cable temples, a nosepiece, and four interchangeable lenses. The temples arecapable of panoscopic tilt adjustment for maximum fit, comfort, and acceptance. Lenses are available in clear, sunglass (neutral gray), two wavelength laser protection, and 3 wavelength laser protection. All lenses areballistic protective and are capable of defeating a 5.8 grain, T-37 shaped fragment simulating projectile at 650feet per second. The SPECS are designed to accommodate the 5th percentile female to the 95 percentile male intwo sizes. A hard carrying case is available that can accommodate a complete spectacle assembly and one extralens.Weight (carrying case with complete spectacle assembly and one extra lens): 1 lb. Cost (carrying case withcomplete spectacle assembly and all four lenses): $500.Eye protection effects of SPECS in GURPSClear lens• Fragmentation (PD 1, DR3 vs. crushing, cutting, and impaling damage)• Sand, Dust, Snow, and Smoke (partial protection, +4 to HT)• Spitted Type S Venom (PD 6, +4 to HT, p.
