A. Calamintha nepeta var. nepeta
(Lesser Calamint)
Sun n 20” tall n Zone: 5–8a, at least
Origin: S. Europe
I hadn’t been as impressed in quite a
while as I was when I first met this plant
in Dale Hendricks’ Pennsylvania garden.
The bushy mound of light green deerresistant
foliage, reeking of peppermint,
was smothered in clouds of tiny, very
light blue flowers. Our plants here in hot
and muggy NC have performed equally
as well, in full flower from June until
October. Calamintha need good drainage
and plenty of air circulation, although this
one has survived far better than other
calaminthas for us. I think rock gardeners
and herb lovers alike will fall in love with
this gem...for me, it was love at first sight!
Calanthe
(Hardy Orchid)
Few plants will tolerate very dark
dry shade as well as the hardy
calanthe orchids. Unlike many
temperamental orchids, calanthes
are very easy-to-grow shade perennials
that multiply into very large
clumps. The magnificent flowers
often boast a clove-like fragrance.
Expect a 3-year wait for them to
make a large enough clump to put
on a dazzling show. All orchids are
nursery propagated from seed....a
7-year or longer process.
B. Calanthe discolor
(Discolor Hardy Calanthe Orchid)
Part Sun to Light Shade n 10” tall
Zone: 6b–9 n Origin: Japan
We finally have enough of this Japanese
native hardy woodland orchid to share.
Calanthe discolor emerges from the
pseudobulb with 2–3 heavily pleated
6” long x 2” wide leaves. As the bulb
offsets, the clumps can get quite thick.
The foliage, which is evergreen to 15
degrees F, is topped in mid-spring with
10” stalks of tiny mahogany flowers with
pure white lower lips...a very easy-togrow
addition to that special spot in the
woodland garden.
Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
C. Calanthe sieboldii
(Siebold’s Hardy Calanthe Orchid)
Light Shade to Shade n 15” tall
Zone: 7–9, possibly colder n Origin: Japan
(syn: Calanthe striata) This hard-to-find
Japanese native terrestrial orchid has
been a superb performer and one of our
favorite calanthes. The evergreen foliage
(except below 10 degrees F) composes a
vigorous 6” tall x 15” wide clump of
deeply pleated leaves. In spring, the
bloom stalks rise from the ground to
reach 15”. Along the scape are dozens of
small pansy-like flowers of bright yellow...quite
stunning. Calanthes prefer
D. Calanthe Takane Hybrids
(Takane Hardy Terrestrial Orchid)
Light Shade to Shade n 10” tall
Zone: 7–9a n Origin: Hybrid
Imagine an easy-to-grow, beautiful,
yellow-flowered orchid that would be
hardy in your woodland garden! These
Asian hybrids are a seed strain developed
from crosses of Calanthe discolor
and Calanthe sieboldii. Calanthe Takane
hybrids make tropical-looking clumps of
8” long x 2” wide pleated green leaves. In
spring, the clumps are topped with 8”
long stalks of flowers that blend yellow,
orange and apricot. These have been
extremely good garden performers in our
trials with a great range of colors.
E. Campanula poscharskyana
‘Camgood’ PP 13,161 (Blue Waterfall
Serbian Bellflower)
Part Sun to Light Shade n 8” tall
Zone: 4–7 n Origin: Balkans
(aka: Campanula ‘Blue Waterfall’) Got
dry shade? We’ve got a plant for you!
This Blooms of Bressingham introduction
makes a weed-smothering mat of creeping
stems and small dark green leaves,
which are topped from May through
August with small star-shaped, lavenderblue
flowers. Although Campanula
‘Camgood’ prefers slightly moist soils
and part sun, we have found it’s tolerance
for dry shade to be nothing short of
amazing. Compared to the straight
species, Campanula ‘Camgood’ makes a
tidier mat with darker green leaves. In 3
years, you should expect a 4’ wide mat of
flowers attractive to hummingbirds.
Canna
(Canna Lily)
We are pleased to offer some
unique canna lily selections for
both flowers and colored foliage.
Combine these brazen and bold
perennials with finer-textured
plants like ornamental grasses for
dazzling combinations. Our plants
are grown in gallon pots and not
shipped as dried rhizomes. Cannas
are extremely heavy feeders that
also like full sun, baking heat, and
plenty of moisture during the growing
season. If your cannas look ratty
during the summer, that’s a sure
sign an extra shovel of manure is
required. You can cut ragged plants
to the ground even in midsummer,
add fertilizer, water, and stand
back. In areas with warm summers
as well as winters above 0 degrees
