In the 1950’ s duringour 90 days training period, we all had theopportunity to fire this weapon. In 1954, during thefinal year of my service, I had to leave myhometown and move to Port Kembla foremployment. On starting my job at L ysaghts, I wasinformed that the building that housed our lockersand showers, was the building where the Owen gunhad been manufactured. One day I had cause to go tothe Main Of fice. On the wall above the mainReception Counter, was a large “blown-up” drawingof the Owen. The mention of Australians beingtaught to fire one to three shots instead of a longerburst would be correct. As I recall, the shots ran upand to the left. In 1972 few Diggers afterbeing abused by the Left would say theyserved in Vietnam. Today few protestorswill admit their part in the anti-warcampaign.
