As a part of Morah Yonina’sscience curriculum, every student collected microbes from around SAR. They thengrew them in petri dishes. The students compared the growth of microbes in thedifferent areas of the school. The students have been learning about germs andhow they are spread. They did a test on what is the best thing to use to get germsoff of their hands. They tried hot water, cold water, Purell and soap. Then using aglow sck in a dark room they were able to actually see which worked best. Here’swhat they discovered: Hot water works beer then cold. Soap works beer thanPurell. Faucets, soap, bathroom walls and hands all glow with germs aer use!!(Though a lile bit of germ is good for the immune system, according to MorahYonina.)As a finale to this lesson, the students were given a research project. They wereable to choose between microbes, bacteria, virus or fungus and were asked tocreate a “WANTED” poster much like they did for criminals in the old west. Thestudents were incredibly creave and displayed their posters in the fih gradearea. They had a lot of fun making these posters and learned a lot aboutmicrobiology in the process.

The focus ofour trip was maple syrup. We began our journey with the nave American Indiansand learned how they discovered how to make maple syrup. Since they didn't havemetal pots or things to heat, they very cleverly heated stones in their fires, pickedup the stones with scks, and placed them in wood canoes that held sap. Theyknew that the water from the sap needed to evaporate in order to leave behindthe sugar, so they would bathe the hot stones with the watery sap and the waterwould "steam off" leaving behind the sugary syrup. The children were stunned tolearn that this job fell to the children of the tribe since their parents were busyhunng! Eventually the pilgrims came with metal pots and the process became alot easier.

SAR Academy Mail - Chadashot - 3.8.13 - Parshat Vayakhel-Pekudeihttps://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&ik=e6a71dc6c6&view=pt&sear...8 of 20 3/8/2013 1:45 PMWe learned a lot of interesng facts: Sap is made of sugar and water. We need tocook the sap in order to get syrup. It takes 40 gallons of sap to get just 1 gallon ofsyrup! We then walked over to the "sugar bush" which isn't a bush at all, but a colleconof maple trees. If you want to get sap, here is what you need to do: Find a maturemaple tree and drill a small hole into it. Take a spile and tap it into the tree andthen hang your pail from it....then wait. You will be amazed to see sap dripping outof the tree! And it looks just like water! Another fun fact that we learned was thatwhen you take the spile out of the tree, that spot will heal and create a "bellybuon" on the trunk. And in case you are wondering when is the best me tocollect your sap? It's best end of winter beginning of spring , when the nights aresll very cold but the days are starng to get warm ( because the sap is reallyflowing well at this me up and down the tree). Thanks to our amazing guideTravis!Tricks are for Kids!Back by popular demand, Shai Krug entertained the students with more magic inhis seminar "Magic and the Magic of the Mind" during the brown bag lunch series.Shai spoke of what makes a "bad" magic trick, versus a "good" one. He explainedthat magicians really know how our brains work, and that the tricks they do reallyfool our brains so that we believe the magic has happened.

Two games, twovictories. First, it was Solomon Schechter of Bergen County. Aer geng off to aslow start, the Sng made a nice run over the second and third quarters blowingthis one wide open. Every member of the team played an acve role in this one asthe Sng rolled, 44-19.Thursday’s game at Noam had a very different sequence of events. While the slowstart was evident yet again, the Sng baled through a number of turnovers andmissed shots to establish a 7 point lead at halime. It wasn’t the preest thirdquarter, but the lead remained 7 points heading to the 4th at 26-19. At this point, the offense for SAR seemingly disappeared as Noam began to mount a comeback. With the lead standing at 28-27 for SAR with just under one minute remaining,Noam called a meout to design a play. Aer wasng 30 seconds, they aackedthe basket and put in a shot to give them their first lead since 5-4 in the firstquarter, at 29-28 with 24 seconds le. Following a meout, Drew Greenbaum set apick for Judah Oppenheimer who found a wide open Nat Waxman in the corner. There could not have been a beer me for the Sng to break out of their quarterlong offensive slump as the shot swished through the net, giving the sng the wildvictory! 3-0! The pasuksays that “Vechol Chacham lev bachem yavou vayasu et kolasher tzivah hashem”—every wise-hearted person amongyou shall come and make everything that Hashem has commanded. This meansthat Hashem only wanted the people who were smart AND who cared about it. Forinstance, if someone was smart but didn’t care about the mishkan Hashem didn’twant them—that meant they didn’t have a good heart.A few pesukim later, the Torah describes the people who are giving the materialsfor the mishkan. Hashem only wanted people who would give materials becausethey wanted to help build the mishkan, not just because Hashem commandedthem. The pasuk says “vayavo haanashim al hanashim kol nediv lev heviucham…”—The men came with the women, everyone whose heart movated himbrought all sorts of gold ornaments. This means that Hashem only wanted peoplewho cared and who really wanted to make the mishkan special. Both pesukim include the word “lev” (heart). The first one says chacham lev andthe second one says nediv lev. It repeats the word “lev” to emphasize the word“lev”, to show that Hashem wants our lev. Hashem cares if you have a good lev. This means being nice and kind and really caring.Shabbat Shalom."Peter Pan. It's happy and sad and imaginative all at the same time.
