Over the years,members <strong>of</strong> the congregation played an importantrole in the development <strong>of</strong> the town, and leadingindustrialists, innovators, members <strong>of</strong> Parliamentand political radicals are amongst those who areinterred in its catacombs, which may be the earliestin the provinces to be opened for public burials.| (Telephone in advance) A1Ω ı Sw H ·An excellent example <strong>of</strong> a modern church heavilyinfluenced by the Liturgical Movement anddesigned as the House <strong>of</strong> the People <strong>of</strong> God forits parish and the wider community after theprevious Victorian church was destroyed by firein 1993. The architecture and public art withinthis church have been designed to invitequestions rather than present answers andinclude an altar made out <strong>of</strong> a massive tree trunkand a series <strong>of</strong> commissioned textile hangings.¬ (Open Mon-Fri 8am-5pm) A2 Ô ıS(<strong>Wakefield</strong> Kirkgate or Sandal & Agbrigg) w H ·56HORBURY | St Peter and St Leonard 7Widely held to be one <strong>of</strong> the finest Georgian churches in WestYorkshire, St Peter and St Leonard dates from 1791-1793 and wasdesigned by architect John Carr as a gift to his native town. Carr isburied in the crypt and the church stands as a fitting memorial to hiswork. Built <strong>of</strong> finely dressed gritstone in a cruciform plan, it has animpressive pedimented south porch with four ionic columns.
