Although this material allows for theunique performance produced by the spiral action, it also makes the bit somewhatmore brittle than a bit with a steel body. In order to obtain the maximum life fromspiral bits please observe the following precautions:• Don’t force the bit.• Use a steady feed rate, avoiding sudden or jerky starts and plunges.• Watch for smoking or increased resistance when cutting. Those areindications that the bit is dull and ready for resharpening. The extra heatcreated by a dull bit makes the bit much more likely to break.
