For those departing for the North Channel:
PROPANE … BAD/GOOD NEWS
I have received more emails and calls from boaters about this issue then about any other concern. Ontario’s
stringent laws about propane refill stations have made it very difficult for small service areas to justify the
expense. The Little Current and Killarney stations are closed for this reason. Most communities have the tank
exchange stores for the 20lb BBQ tanks but these are of little use to boaters with their special sized tanks.
Boaters who went to the people at NAPA in Little Current who helped by having tanks refilled in Manitowaning
will not be able to do so as the Manitowaning site is now closed also.
The good news:
You can still get your personal tanks refilled in Gore Bay and Spanish. In both cases, the operation is several
km away from the docks but for a modest fee the store in Gore Bay will pick up and return your tanks in a short
period of time. In Spanish, Glen Parsons, LAST RESORT wrote that the Esso Station in town has a refill station
but you have to arrange to get your tanks to them. If you are in Little Current and have access to a vehicle, you
can obtain a refill in Mindemoya (40 km away)
NORTH CHANNEL WATER LEVELS
The gauge in Little Current is recording an average reading of 0.1m (4”) above chart datum. Last year at this
time, the water level averaged .2m (9”) above chart datum.
