My first encounter with the Yamaha Oak Custom kit was on a South American clinic tour some years ago.
I was completely blown away by these drums.
Great projection and clarity of tone gives these drums a very unique and distinct presence.
Definitely one of my favorites. Peace and Love.
Rodrigo Y Gabriela (Guitarist)
KOZO SUGANUMA (Drummer)
Bert Smorenburg (Keyboardist)
... and other musicians!
I N T E R V I E W
- Why and when did you start playing guitars?
It all started when I was 4 years old, playing classical guitar by my mom's influence. Later
on, I took piano lessons, violin lesson, & acoustic guitar lessons but I was not quite sure if
I really enjoyed it. And then, my goal for life had been chosen when I was in the 5th grade
watching PBS’ annual re-broadcast of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. We were at a
friends' house and I will never forget how my friends were giving love and respect to Jimi
Hendrix and I could not get along with the mood right then, but I for some reason knew,
that's what I will do when I grow up, play electric guitar and look as powerful and crazy as
Jimi Hendrix, someday. From that day on, I remember nothing else about my childhood
besides playing football, being a school patrol & practice electric guitar playing methods on
the classical guitar I had at the time. And, later on when I did finally get the electric guitar of
my own by mowing lawns& cleaning the outside of neighborhood's homes, I just played
guitar and bought cassette tapes, which was practically all I owned at the time. Haha~
- What is the difference between Yamaha guitars and others when played?
I am going to be honest. Playing a Yamaha guitar will not take you to outer space by
turning it into other company’s guitar. But if that is not what you wanted in the first place
like me, and wanted that extra edge of the Yamaha's unique ingredient that had started way
back during the PEACE days of Santana back in the 60’s, if you ever dreamed of a Les Paul
that has a different personality which sometimes screams louder, but can be so gentle it
cuddles the rest of the sound from the band. Would being the only musical instrument
manufacturer which makes practically every instrument in the world have anything to do
with it? Hmm... I wonder if that's the case. And, it can look even scarier or prettier from
time to time and make you feel as if you can do anything in front of any crowd with it with
confidence, this is the guitar for you. And, believe me, I have played them all and I know
what I want. It's definitely the Yamaha instruments and they know what they are doing!
- What is the best way to make better SG2000 sound?
I currently use the SG2000 guitars into the Cornford amps. Probably one of the best
combinations you can ever get for a great guitar sound. I do use several effects but
probably the most important effect of all would be the hands and the inspirations which
give birth to new musical ideas. All in all, there is nothing impossible with the SG2000.
Anything is possible, anything! I have been told by the Yamaha office in Korea that I will be
getting my hands on the maiden guitar to be released in Korea, the SG3000 in a couple of
months. I can’t wait to play tunes on that one as it would be like a dream come true to just
hold and play what Santana used to play as I grew up to his music as he looked so cool
playing so many great classic tunes with it. Who knows? I might cry!
- How do you make your ‘unique Kim Se - Hwang’ sound with SG2000 in stage performance?
My unique style could probably define in two ways. Within Korea, they say I play like
American butter. Outside of Korea, I am the guitar ambassador and hold the signature Kpop
sound in electric guitar. I guess that's why the major broadcast companies always get
me to meet up with international bands during their visit to Korea and actually getting to
meet, hear, and play with world renowned wonderful artists has always been a fundamental
experience for me in many ways. From that experience, I try to play in many different styles
but try to keep a fundamental root of tone within the complex versatile styles of music. This
is important as people tend to forget the music they heard yesterday but I do also realize
the special characteristics of guitar heroes from the past and now and they all keep a
signature sound along with their playing. I can happily say, I have a signature sound and it
does work in many different music styles. It’s kind hard to explain in words and can sound
cheesy so, just come see me play!
- Please give a message to fan.
Thank you so much for this great opportunity and hope you found me and my environment
in a new interest. If you would like to know more about me, you can always do a search on
me by my Korean name in major search engines such as www.naver.com or
www.daum.net or you can just visit our band's home page of www.nextfan.co.kr . This
has been a pleasurable experience and hope to see you again very soon. Until then,
“Nothing change but evolves”
This is the Yamaha’s policy being continued until present from the
development of SG175 which its design was perfected and being kept for
more than 30 years.
After SG175 was designed in 1974, Yamaha has passed over its design to
SG2000 with the original technology of T-cross one piece neck and sustain
plate, completing not only design but also the sound.
And then, still the SG series made an evolution. Avalon Bindings which
reminds of the traditional SG175. CUSTOM logo printed on the truss-rod
cover, “Professional” marked on the pick guard. Yamaha's original IRA
(Initial Response Acceleration) technology offering enriched sustain.
Nothing changes in appearance but the internal aspect keeps
innovating…
Yamaha SG 3000 evolves to another dimension.
PLAYS DTX Series
From Hard Rock to Fusion, Jazz Pops…Kozo plays variety of music genre
and also his fast and accurate drumming style makes him to be called “TE-
KAZ-OH”. This time we interviewed Kozo to find out the way of using DTX.
With few steps from the table and I can jam with songs.
DTX makes drum practice very easy and casual.
How How do do you you utilize utilize DTX DTX in in your your room? room?
Usually I use Laptop for my work, so wherever I sit it
will be a workroom. When I am working at the dining
table, I receive songs which I will play in next session.
So I listen to the songs then walk aside to DTX and
connect it with PC. Then I can virtually jam with songs,
this is very convenient for me. I can even play in
midnight, without using much stamina. This is best
system to grasp the structures and patterns of song.
So So you you think think DTX DTX is is good good for for practice. practice.
The rebound of pad is good so its suits for practice.
Recently some kids start playing drums with DTX so
they can hear the good drum sound from DTX
module. When you play with the acoustic kit, the play
often becomes strong and it doesn’t always be the
best sound. On the other hand, you can play DTX in a
relaxed condition, which makes a good sounding.
Please Please give give some some advice advice to to drummers. drummers.
I think learning the basic technique is important.
Practicing rudiments will make you a good drummer.
Like piano always begin with Bier, Rudiments have a
very long history so you must try it. It’s very
profound skill.
Sixology
Sixology is a result of putting 6 very different
individuals together to form a band that is musically
unique in terms of sound and style. Each member of
Sixology has influences that range from blues to
goth to classical to rock n roll. The band’s triple-lead
vocal combination coupled with superb
instrumentation on the keyboards and harmonized
guitar solos separates the 6 from other rock groups.
Its drum rhythms are also unconventional and even
unpredictable at times, giving the group an extra
touch of brilliance. The outcome is Sixology - a study
Since 2004, we have been together as a band. Music is
schools and cafes. At times, we have not enough money
to play music and live, so we called our group
“Unstable” (which describes our lives.) Heavy metal rock
is our favorite kind of music to perform. Many people in
Taiwan feel this style is too noisy, but because of those
who like this style, we don’t shirink back. We hope that
we can encourage others to enjoy heavy metal as much
as we do. We want to give excitement to the music
everyone in Taiwan can experience other music styles.
