Technical papersreport on a full range of topics relevant tosoftware research <strong>and</strong> practice, includingsoftware engineering principles, theories,techniques, tools, <strong>and</strong> empiricalevaluations. Authors of particularlymeritorious papers will be invited tosubmit an extended paper to IEEETransactions on Software Engineering.Also, the top technical papers at theconference will be recognized with a BestPaper Award.Abstracts <strong>and</strong> papers due:September 9, 2002SOFTWARE ENGINEERING EDUCATIONAND TRAINING (SEET) TRACK PAPERSProper software engineering education<strong>and</strong> training can significantly improve thecurrent state of software development <strong>and</strong>help eliminate some of the traditionalproblems associated with industrialpractices. This track provides aninternational <strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong> discussing topicsrelated to software engineering education<strong>and</strong> training, promoting innovations inteaching <strong>and</strong> training, <strong>and</strong> offering newdirections. The scope of the track includesall software engineering education <strong>and</strong>training matters, such as curriculumdevelopment, methods of course delivery,innovative approaches, trainingprograms, collaborative projects withindustry, SWEBOK topics, <strong>and</strong> newsoftware engineering programs (includingPhD programs).<strong>Papers</strong> due: October 4, 2002EXPERIENCE REPORTSThis track will provide accounts of theapplication of software engineering. Both"classic" experience reports <strong>and</strong> casestudies are welcome. Classic experiencereports give an account of a significantproject accompanied by a critical reviewof the experience <strong>and</strong> a discussion ofsome general lessons to be drawn fromthe experience. Case studies describe aproduct <strong>and</strong> give rationale <strong>for</strong> the keydecisions made during the development ofthe product.<strong>Papers</strong> due: October 4, 2002TUTORIAL PROPOSALSTutorials provide conference participantswith the opportunity to gain new insights,knowledge, <strong>and</strong> skills in a softwareengineering area. We are solicitingproposals <strong>for</strong> full-day (6-hour) or half-day(3-hour) tutorials. A tutorial can cover anysoftware engineering topic, from practicaltechniques, guidelines, st<strong>and</strong>ards, <strong>and</strong>surveys, to theoretical issues.Proposals due: October 4, 2002PANEL PROPOSALSPanel sessions serve to stimulatediscussion about issues of importance tothe software engineering community.Panels may emphasize complex technicalissues, or they may provide anopportunity to air views <strong>and</strong> addresscontroversies through in<strong>for</strong>med debate.Suitable topics <strong>for</strong> discussion includepressing issues in software engineeringtheory <strong>and</strong> practice, emerging trends <strong>and</strong>enabling technologies, <strong>and</strong> professional,organizational, <strong>and</strong> social issuesassociated with software engineering.Proposals due: October 4, 2002CO-LOCATED EVENT AND WORKSHOPPROPOSALSCo-located events <strong>and</strong> workshops can beexisting <strong>for</strong>ums that are co-located withICSE in 2003 or they can be new onetimeevents. There are at least three types:(1) co-located conferences or workshopsthat complement the ICSE program butare otherwise independent; (2) ICSEworkshops that are one-time events thatfocus on a timely research topic <strong>and</strong>/orapplication; <strong>and</strong> (3) other, non-workshoptypes of events, such as the DoctoralSymposium. <strong>Participation</strong> in an ICSEworkshop is usually limited to 25 to 40participants <strong>and</strong> is based on submitting aposition statement by a deadline specifiedby the workshop's organizers. Anyonewho is interested in organizing a colocatedevent or workshop of any kindshould submit a proposal describing theproposed event, as per the instructions onour web page.Proposals due: October 4, 2002RESEARCH DEMOS AND POSTERPROPOSALSFormal research demonstrations enableconference participants to view researchsystems in action <strong>and</strong> to discuss thesystems with the people who createdthem. These demonstrations are intendedto show early, non-commercialimplementations of novel softwareengineering concepts. Thesedemonstrations are suitable <strong>for</strong> maturepresentations that can be communicatedeffectively to a large audience usingprojection technology. In addition, <strong>for</strong>maldemonstrations are required to display aposter. Posters, whether part of researchdemonstrations or not, provide theopportunity to exhibit late-breaking results<strong>and</strong> to discuss these results withconference participants.Proposals due: January 10, 2003DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUMAPPLICATIONSThe doctoral symposium is a <strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong>Ph.D. students to present <strong>and</strong> discuss theirresearch objectives, methods, <strong>and</strong>preliminary results at an early enoughstage to allow useful guidance incompleting their dissertation <strong>and</strong> initiatingresearch careers. Students will interactwith <strong>and</strong> receive useful guidance fromestablished software engineeringresearchers. Students should considerparticipating in the doctoral symposium atleast six months be<strong>for</strong>e completion of theirdissertation, but after having settled on aresearch area or thesis topic.Applications due: January 10, 2003STUDENT VOLUNTEER APPLICATIONSThe student volunteer program is anopportunity <strong>for</strong> students from around theworld to associate with the topresearchers <strong>and</strong> practitioners in softwareengineering. In return <strong>for</strong> about 16 hoursof their time, student volunteers receive acomplimentary registration which includesall conference meals. In the past,volunteers helped as reporters <strong>for</strong> theICSE Window on the World (WOW)daily newsletter <strong>and</strong> assisted theorganizers with running the conferencesmoothly.
