An aged dependent relative is a person who:
• is old enough to be granted an age pension under the Social Security Act 1991; and
• is not in a married relationship or a de facto relationship; and
• has been dependent, and remains dependent on the Australian relative for a reasonable period
(normally 3 years).
Your relative must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
You will meet the age requirement if you are eligible to be granted an age pension under the Social
Security Act 1991. Men qualify for an age pension at age 65 years or over. For women, it depends on
their date of birth. The minimum age for women to get an age pension began to increase from 1 July
1995. It will continue to increase until it reaches 65 by 2014, making it the same for everyone. Until then,
a woman’s qualifying age depends on her date of birth.
Qualifying ages for Australian age pension
For men – the qualifying age is 65 years.
For women – the qualifying age for women depends on their date of birth (see below)
