Saapaper is made from bark whichhas been stripped from the youngbranches of the Mulberry tree,Broussnetia Papyrifera. The barkfirst must be sun dried to removeall traces of sap, and then oncedried soaked in water until soft,Umbrella villagethen boiled with caustic soda intoa mushy paste which is then putinto a machine that beats theproduct to remove the fibers. Thepaste is then spread out intomesh frames to dry. From there the saa paper is fittedto a bamboo frame of either fan orparasol and finally hand painted. As the fame of Bor Sang’s beautifulproducts grew, so did thevillage and the manufacturing ofthe umbrellas. Nowadays, BorSang has grown to include allkinds of handicrafts, from silk tosilver but it is still famous for thebeauty of its hand-painted silkColorfully painted silk umbrellas andparasols brighten up the streets of Bor Sang.and saa paper fans, parasols andumbrellas.Bor Sang holds an annual festivalin January to celebrate theirumbrellas and a Miss Bor Sangis chosen to represent the village. One of the most beautiful sightsto see are the hundreds of umbrellashanging from inside thehouses lit by lanterns and peopleeven decorate their vehicles withfans and umbrellas! The elaborately painted fans make a greatgift for others, or even yourself!I have to admit to havingbought a few of the big fans tohang on my wall, I love the brightcolors of the flowers and birdsand seeing them perched on mywall cheers my day up no end.AUG Sports Today is edited by Phitsanu Thepthong for 15 th ASEAN University Games 2010, Chiang Mai, ThailandPrinted and Published by Chiang Mai Mail Publishing Co., Ltd. 209/5 Moo 6, 2 nd Ring Road, T.Faham, A.Muang, Chiang Mai 50000.Tel. 0 5385 2557 • Fax. 0 5326 0738 • E-mail: cnxmail@chiangmai-mail.com • Web-Site: www.chiangmai-mail.com
