Departmentof Humanities,Social Sciences& CommunicationsRichmond is aparticularly interestinguniversity in whichto study Humanities,Social Sciences andCommunications.Virtually every student is from adifferent country, often far from homeand wondering – perhaps for the firsttime – what it really means to be alivein an era of accelerating globalisation. When our students arrive in London, they have many questions whichrelate to issues of identity, culture, language, religion, society, citizenship, history and consumption – all ofwhich are addressed in the studyof the undergraduate programmestaught by the Department. Our students often comment on theready availability of our faculty. Averageclasses at Richmond are both muchsmaller and much more ethnicallydiverse than at most other universities. With a typical Junior or Senior levelclass size of between ten to twentystudents, we emphasise individualattention, small group work, studentparticipation, personal research paperwriting and seminar-style discussion, rather than large, impersonal lecturesand ‘multiple-choice’ styles of testing. Our aim as faculty is to ensurethat, by the time you graduate, youhave a really solid theoretical andmethodological grounding in yourchosen course of study, ending witha substantial piece of individualresearch. Our success here is one ofthe main reasons why Richmond’sCommunications, Humanities andSocial Science alumni have gainedentry to leading graduate schoolsall over the world. We invite you to join us and to addyour own creativity to the explorationof these rich and diverse disciplines.Dr Alex SeagoChair, Department of Humanities,Social Sciences and Communications30 www.richmond.ac.uk31
