Publicationhistory: This painting was engravedby Thomas Ryder as “ThePolitician/Published as the Actdirects May 1, 1782, by T. Ryder andSold by A. Torre and J. Thane, No.28 Hay Market.” A second versionof the engraving was published asthe frontispiece to “The Life andWorks of Benjamin Franklin”,London, 1815. The painting isdiscussed at length in CharlesColeman Seller’s “Benjamin Franklinin Portraiture” (1962), p 277-280.Seller comments that a possiblesource for the portrait is anengraving published in “PoliticalMagazine and Parlimentary, Navaland Literary Journal” October, 1780accompanying a highly critical “Lifeand Character of Dr. Franklin “ the“author and encourager of theAmerican rebellion.” Seller notesthat a replica or early copy of thisportrait is in the U.S. Embassy, Paris.$60,000-80,000
