What is to be done Initial registration - done Updating• particularly when there is a change of contact person IP Registering for newly includedresources This can happen several times a year And of course, at the beginning of a year
Setup When the publisher notifies you,check first that it is working Try to learn about the range ofaccess Are any titles excluded? How many years of back file access? Add a link to the new resource toyour library journals webpage Notify your users
Helping your users Users need help in finding resourcesand accessing them To assist them we need to• Know the resources very well• Know the coverage Exclusions Date range accessible• Know the alternatives
Knowing our resources We need to familiarize ourselves withthe browsing / searching of ourresources It can be difficult to find something that isavailable, within reasonable time Some presentations here But then we have to spend some timeourselves just browsing our resources,because the setup a little bit different forevery resourceThis will be the focus of the next presentation
Knowing the coverage Title exclusions• Some publishers exclude some titles In 2008 Nature gave us access to 66 of their72 titles• Some gateways also carry journals fromother publishers - not always coveredby our license Blackwell-Synergy could not give us accessto Econometrica (Econometric Society) etc.
Knowing the coverage Date range covered• Usually 5/10 years of backfile + current• Only APS and Annual Reviews givesaccess to full archive• EBSCO gives access to backfile going much furtherback, but has 6 or 12 month embargoes on most titles• you don’t get current issues
Knowing the alternatives The same title may be available intwo different places When you can’t access something,consider• EBSCO• OARE, AGORA, HINARI, eJDS etc. These are to be covered later
