EDWARD L. DAUGHERTY, A SOUTHERN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT
EXHIBITION EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND!

The Cherokee Garden Library is pleased to announce
the exhibition, Edward L. Daugherty, A Southern
Landscape Architect: Exploring New Forms, has
been extended to October 10, 2009. The exhibition traces
the seminal works in landscape architecture, urban planning,
conservation, and historic preservation created by Daugherty
from 1953 to the present.
With a vibrant practice that encompasses residential,
commercial, and institutional projects in eight states and
abroad, Edward L. Daugherty is one of the most significant
post-World War II landscape architects in Atlanta and the
Southeast. Although the breadth and depth of his work are
extensive, many common threads run through his designs.
However, nothing is more evident than his regard for
people: the landscape architects he has mentored, the
professionals he has collaborated with, and those his designs
touch. This sensibility was cultivated at the Graduate
School of Design at Harvard University where he learned
analytical thinking and the value of honoring the human
scale. While there, he adopted the dictum coined by landscape
architecture professor Norman Newton that continues to
guide his work: “Design can be good only insofar as it
does good.”

The exhibit includes a sampling of significant projects from
Daugherty’s career: redevelopment of Marietta Square,
Georgia Governor’s Mansion, Georgia Institute of Technology,
All Saints Episcopal Church, Henrietta Egleston Hospital
for Children at Emory, Ahavath Achim Synagogue, and
Hahn Woods. The show also includes The Cultural Landscape
Foundation’s oral history module featuring Edward Daugherty.

A very successful Gallery Talk held on February 26 featured
tours led by Mr. Daugherty and Spencer Tunnell. Over 70
guests enjoyed learning about the importance of good
landscape design, techniques used in creating landscape
drawings over the decades, and collections pertaining to
various landscape architects in the Garden Library.
