III. Expanding the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Planning</str<strong>on</strong>g> ProcessAdditi<strong>on</strong>al points to c<strong>on</strong>sider, if the <strong>Chapter</strong> would like to expand the planning process.1. C<strong>on</strong>duct an analysis of your <strong>Chapter</strong>’s internal Strengths and Weaknesses al<strong>on</strong>g with the externalOpportunities and Threats (SWOT Analysis). In doing this exercise, the <strong>Chapter</strong> can get a better idea ofits strengths and how to take advantage of them, and also identify its weaknesses and discuss how toovercome them. Thinking strategically about external opportunities and threats helps the <strong>Chapter</strong> beproactive in utilizing human and financial resources and prioritizing activities.One method for performing a SWOT Analysis recommends that:– Each attendee prepare a list of the <strong>Chapter</strong>’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threatsahead of time,– All participants post their different ideas using individual post-it notes <strong>on</strong> a large sheet of paperfor each category,– One member works as a facilitator to keep the process moving forward, and– The informati<strong>on</strong> discovered is used to inform the activities the <strong>Chapter</strong> undertakes.For example, if <strong>on</strong>e of the <strong>Chapter</strong>’s strengths is good attendance <strong>on</strong> field trips, build <strong>on</strong> this by using thetrips to promote other <strong>Chapter</strong> activities, volunteer opportunities and membership in the <strong>Chapter</strong>.2. Clarify which audiences the <strong>Chapter</strong> needs to serve in order to accomplish its goals, and what are theneeds of those audiences. (As an example, families with young children might have a need for activitiesthat they can do together, at times other than in the evening.)3. Discuss other services and programs provided by groups in your area, and how to create a special nichefor the <strong>Chapter</strong>.4. Brainstorm a list of possible partners – other Audub<strong>on</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong>s or a State Office, organizati<strong>on</strong>s,businesses and individuals – who could provide energy, funding, or other assistance to the <strong>Chapter</strong> to helpaccomplish the <strong>Chapter</strong>’s goals and activities.5. Identify resources in your community that the <strong>Chapter</strong> can tap to assist in accomplishing its goals. Thesecan include volunteers, funding, and sources of material goods.7
IV. SURE Ways to Follow Up <strong>on</strong> Annual <str<strong>on</strong>g>Planning</str<strong>on</strong>g>Share the plan with all <strong>Chapter</strong> leaders – make sure that every<strong>on</strong>e has a copy. Summarize the plan and shareit with <strong>Chapter</strong> members.Update the plan as needed. If you find that you cannot accomplish <strong>on</strong>e of your planned activities, modify theplan or see if you can find a substitute activity.Revisit the plan regularly – as a board of directors, review progress <strong>on</strong> achieving the plan’s specific goalsand objectives at least <strong>on</strong>ce a quarter.Evaluate successes and failures at the end of the year, and use those less<strong>on</strong>s in creating next year’s plan.8
