SermonNotes Sunday, February 26, 2012Power SourceJohn 14:1-31Dave Peterson preachingJohn made his reason for writing the gospel crystal clear when he wrote, That you may come tobelieve that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that in believing you may have life in His Name.Having prepared Himself for all that was to come, Jesus now begins to prepare His disciples. Jesus’teachings are making the disciples increasingly distressed and anxious. He pointed them beyond thecrucifixion to the resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit.John 14:1-14 – I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life• Jesus’ words stirred up all sorts of anxiety in the disciples. In what ways do anxieties impact yourbehavior for good and/or for ill?• In 13:36-7, Simon Peter expressed his anxiety with two questions. In response Jesus gave a stronganswer in several parts:• Do not be troubled. Jesus doesn’t offer this as advice but as a command! What’s the difference?• Believe in God…Believe in me. Jesus was trying to shift their focus from what to what? Howwould this help? See 2 Timothy 1:7.• I will go, prepare a place, and come again to receive you. How does it help you to know that Jesushas everything under control?• Thomas expressed another anxiety in vs. 5. What help does Jesus say we will receive if we keepfocused on Him?• Why is it important for Jesus to emphasize His intimate relationship with His Father?• In response to Philip’s anxiety Jesus said, You will do greater things than me. What do you thinkJesus meant by this?John 14:15-24 – I will not leave you orphaned• Jesus moved the disciples beyond what they were losing to what they were gaining. Make a list ofways you’ve found that the Holy Spirit works in your life.• Why does Jesus repeatedly connect loving Him/His Father with keeping His commands?• Why do you think Jesus promised I will not leave you orphaned instead of saying simply Hewouldn’t leave us alone?John 14:25-31 – Peace I leave with you• Jesus encouraged the disciples that the Holy Spirit would continue His teaching ministry in whatways?• What does Jesus say will be the outcomes of obedience to the Holy Spirit?• Jesus mentioned the ruler of this world, and He warned that faithfulness would meet seriousresistance. In light of the fact that this ruler has no power over Jesus, what should our attitude be?2012 Covenant (Pledge) ReceiptsFebruary Actual BudgetWeek 1 $146,845 $137,500Week 2 $120,992 $137,500Week 3 $99,476 $137,500Week 4 _______ _______ $137,500Totals $367,313 $550,000Year-to-Date Totals (1 month)2012 Actual $701,608Budget $730,0002011 Actual $738,905
