However, new data and a detailed rangeanalysis based on all confirmed locations and habitatpreferences revealed that the extent of occurrenceis larger than previously thought. Recent analyses ofthe available habitat left for B. torquatus suggest thatthis species has an area of occupancy less than 1,000km² (based on remaining forest within its highly fragmentedrange). Nevertheless, its range, area of occupancy,and habitat are in continuing decline due toongoing habitat loss and degradation in the BrazilianAtlantic forest. Furthermore, it is threatened by hunting.B. torquatus is therefore listed as Vulnerable, withthe caveat that a re-assessment should be performedas soon as more data on the wild populations becomeavailable.Taxonomic Note: There are three genetically distinctpopulations of this species in the states of Bahia,Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro (Moraes-Barros etal., 2002, 2006; Lara-Ruiz et al., 2008). The northernpopulation (in southern Bahia) might be considered aseparate subspecies (Lara-Ruiz et al., 2008), althoughindistinguishable from the others in external morphology(A. Chiarello, pers. comm., 2010). For informationon the genetic diversity of maned sloths, seealso Lara-Ruiz (2004).Geographic Range: B. torquatus is restricted to thecoastal Atlantic forests of eastern Brazil (Fig. 4). Historically,it possibly occurred throughout the coastalforest of Bahia through to the state of Pernambuco(footnote by O. Pinto in Wied’s 19th century account;Coimbra-Filho, 1972). At present, the southern partof the state of Bahia is the primary stronghold forthe species. Maned sloths were recently reported fromthe state of Sergipe (Chagas et al., 2009) but thus farno records have been collected in the adjacent state ofAlagoas. The extensive deforestation of suitable habitatin this state suggests that it is unlikely to survivethere. A natural biogeographic gap occurs in northernEspírito Santo, perhaps due to a higher degreeof deciduity in the forests of this region (Hirschand Chiarello, in press). The species does not occurfrom the left bank of Doce River to the vicinity ofMucuri River. It has been reported from extremenorthern Minas Gerais on the left bank of JequitinhonhaRiver. Bradypus torquatus has been introducedto some National Parks in Espírito Santo (CaparaóNational Park) and Rio de Janeiro (Tijuca NationalEdentata no. 11(2) • 2010 119
