kewaunee pierhead lighthouseImagine thick blankets of fog coveringthe entrance to the harbor so thick thatpeople could not see their hand in frontof them. These foggy conditions alongKewaunee’s shore could make boattravel dangerous. Back in 1892 whenrumors spread that Kewaunee containedgold, immigrants rushed to Kewauneeto cash in on that gold. At this timeKewaunee’s chances of becoming amajor port on Lake Michigan were high.A pair of range lights were installed in 1891 that helped guide people in from thefog. The next year, construction of the piers and dredging of the river began. Therewas an elevated catwalk where the lighthouse keeper would enter the lighthouse. The catwalk ran the length of the pier and was used to help keep the lighthousekeeper safe from fierce storms. In 1909, a diaphone fog signal horn was installed in the front range light. Alsoat this time a large fog signal building was built in front of the lighthouse. Thisaddition was used to contain the steam power for the fog signal and doubled ashousing for the keeper as he kept watch on long foggy nights. A 70 foot steelrange light tower was added in 1912.In 1931, the front range lights were eliminated and a new 45 foot focal plane wasconstructed on the roof of the 1909 fog horn addition. It is thought that the old fifthorder Fresnel lenses were moved into the new tower. In 1930, during a routine trip between Kewaunee and Michigan, the car ferry,“Ann Arbor” crashed into the pier and damaged both the pier and lighthouse. TheU.S. Army Corps of Engineers were in charge of repairing the damage.Between 1931 and the present time there were few major changes. The catwalkwas removed and the door moved to pier level. In 1981, the light was automatedby an electric four-bulb changer, but the fifth order Fresnel light still shines its whitebeam on fishermen. The diaphone fog signal was also removed from the tower in1981, but a Kewaunee native recorded the foghorn’s unique sound before it wasdismantled. Now, the 30 minute recording he made is enshrined in the Library ofCongress’ National Recording Registry.Kewaunee’s square lighthouse, resembling the Holland Lighthouse, is white witha red roof. It is steel frame constructed and covered with ¼ inch steel plate. The tower height is 43 feet and there are no living quarters in the house. Thelighthouse is located on the south pier and on the north pier is a navigation maker.Although real gold was never found in Kewaunee, and car ferry service betweenKewaunee and Michigan has come to an end, Kewaunee’s lighthouse continuesto serve as a beacon to the many visitors that come to enjoy all Kewaunee has tooffer.23

tug ludingtonMade for WWII the Tug Ludington was built at JacobsonShipyard in Oyster Bay, New York. In February of 1943 theKeel was laid and the tug was finally finished in October ofthat same year. The U.S. Army accepted and christened the tug “MajorWilbur F. Browder” and designated the tug LT-4. The tug’s armament consisted oftwo 50 caliber machine guns mounted above the chartroom and pilothouse. The tug participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, towing ammunition bargesacross the English Channel. After Normandy it traveled to Cherbourg, France toassist in harbor operations until being sent to Plymouth, England until the end of thewar. After the war it joined the U.S. Army Transportation Corps. and returned toNorfolk, Virginia where it continued service along the eastern seaboard. In 1947, the Corps. Of Engineers transferred the tug to Kewaunee, WI and thenrenamed it the “Tug Ludington”. While in Kewaunee it was used in the constructionand maintenance of many harbors on the Great Lakes. The Tug has towed a widevariety of floating equipment. It is estimated that the Tug has hauled over 1 milliontons of cargo. The Tug now rests in Harbor Park in downtown Kewaunee and is open to visitorsfrom Memorial Day Weekend until Labor Day. The Tug is registered in the Nationaland State Register of Historic Places. Besadny Anadromous FisheryWHERE SALMON EGGSARE TURNED INTO SALMONThe Wisconsin Department of NaturalResources (WDNR) operates a fish eggcollection station near the City of Kewaunee. The WDNR’s Besadny Anadromous FisheriesFacility (BAFF) is nestled in a secluded areaalong a quiet, scenic stretch of the KewauneeRiver. Trout and salmon migrating from LakeMichigan are led by flowing water past twounderwater viewing windows to a fish ladder- a series of waterfall-like steps - that leads tosix collection ponds. Fish are moved from the ponds through the spawning processin the building and back to the river - upstream of the barrier dam - to continue theirupstream migration.History in the makingTrout and salmon have been stockedinto Lake Michigan since the early1960’s. Prior to the construction ofBAFF WDNR has relied, at least inpart, on other agencies for eggs and/or fish of several species or strains tomaintain the trout and salmon sportfishery in Wisconsin waters of LakeMichigan. BAFF is designed to serve as a collection station for trout and salmoneggs but the staff there also hatch and raise both lake sturgeon and spotted muskyfor stocking into Lake Michigan and Green Bay respectively. Additionally, BAFFprovides a scenic place for the general public to observe migrating fish and to learnabout fisheries and other WDNR programs through tours and educational programsoffered by the facility. Why we do the Things we DoThe primary objective of the WDNR trout and salmon stocking program for LakeMichigan is to provide a diverse sport fishery for anglers. Each year WDNRstocks millions of trout and salmon into Lake Michigan tributary streams to providea put-grow-and-take in the lake and sport fishery in the tributary streams. Sincemost Wisconsin tributary streams lack the potential to support adequate naturalreproduction, adult trout and salmon must be collected each year and spawned.Their progeny are raised in hatcheries and stocked back into the tributaries tocomplete the cycle.26

Besadny Anadromous FisheryWhen Can We See The Fish Jumping?BAFF operates from March through December with exact dates dependent uponspawning migrations of the various fish species. For specific days either see ourelectronic display sign in the building lobby or call the number listed below.Migration times for the spring steelhead occur from early March through earlyMay. The chinook salmon run begins in mid-September and continues throughmid-November. The fall coho salmon run occurs from mid-September through lateOctober. Seeforellen brown trout begin to enter the stream by mid-October andcontinue to run until the river ices up in late December.Hours of OperationThe Besadny Fisheries Facility is open to the public for viewing every day of the yearduring daylight hours. Fish are not always present. However, general spawningmigration periods are listed above. Please call the number listed below if you needmore information. Special group tours are available and can be arranged by callingMike Baumgartner the Besadny Facility manager at (920) 388-1025. Informationand educational displays also lead visitors on a self guided tour and provide basicinformation on trout and salmon life history, facility operation, and other relatedsubjects. We look forwardto seeing youin the future!!27
