T H E J U R I S TNetworking with the HillCareer Services forum bringslegislators to campusAdistinguished panel that included Howard lawgraduates discussed their Capitol Hill experiencewith students interested in careers in the legislativebranch. The panel shared tactics on how to pursue the legislativejobs that are available and also encouraged studentsto broaden their thinking about the variety of jobsavailable in the legislative branch. The students networkedwith the panelists and discussed best practices for presentinga winning profile. Fabrice E. Coles ‘08, who is legislativedirector for U.S. Rep. Cedric L. Richmond, pulledtogether the diverse group and served as moderator forthe panel. The Office of Career Services coordinated thesession under its annual Career Spotlight Series. T H E J U R I S TNetworking with MicrosoftCorporate attorneys share adviceMicrosoft General Counsel and Executive VicePresident Brad Smith visited Howard law schoolto talk with students about careers and diversityat Microsoft. Smith said that increasing diversity in thenations’ law schools should be a priority because it would“truly make a difference for the next generation of lawstudents.” He said law students will need the support notjust of law schools and universities, but of law firms andin-house legal departments to enter the profession andbe successful. Several Microsoft attorneys accompaniedthe general counsel and after the lecture, spent time withstudents to offer them additional advice. Interim DeanOkianer Christian Dark, faculty members, students, andothers then broadened the discussion at a roundtable moderatedby Howard Law Professor Homer LaRue. The participantsdiscussed challenges facing diverse attorneys,including access and retention, and agreed to continue tocollaborate on these important issues.Students were encouraged to speak with the attorneys aboutdiversity and careers.Third-year law student Brent Radcliff spoke with a Microsoftattorney after the presentation.Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith with fi rst-year lawstudent Adeoye Johnson, the lucky winner of a MicrosoftSurface.3
