3. Top R&D investing companiesThis chapter describes the performance of individual companies, with a focuson the top R&D investors. Among the 2000 <strong>Scoreboard</strong> companies, there are85 companies in the world with more than €1 bn R&D investment (26 from the<strong>EU</strong>), 51 with R&D exceeding €2 bn (16 from the <strong>EU</strong>) and 10 with R&Dexceeding €5 bn (2 from the <strong>EU</strong>).Top 10• In 2008, the top 10 companies accounted for 13.6% of the total R&Dinvestment by the <strong>Scoreboard</strong> companies, less than the 14% accounted forin 2005.• <strong>The</strong> world's top R&D investor in the <strong>2009</strong> <strong>Scoreboard</strong> is Toyota Motor (€7.61bn) from Japan. <strong>The</strong>re are two <strong>EU</strong> companies in the top 10 of the R&Dranking: Volkswagen (now part of Porsche Automobile) 17 , which has becomethe biggest <strong>EU</strong> R&D investor with €5.93 bn, followed by Nokia with €5.32 bn.• <strong>The</strong>re are five US companies in the top 10 of the R&D ranking: Microsoft(€6.48 bn), General Motors (€5.76 bn), Pfizer (€5.72 bn), Johnson & Johnson(€5.45 bn) and Ford Motor (€5.25 bn).• <strong>The</strong> other two companies among the top 10 are from Switzerland (Roche,€5.88 bn and Novartis, €5.19 bn). <strong>The</strong>se two Swiss companies showed anoutstanding trend over the past three years, increasing their R&D investmentby 50%.• As last year, three companies in the top 10 have shown double digit growthin R&D investment, partly due to acquisitions.
