New restaurant opens at downtown Invermere Inn By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Chef Derek Standbrook and his wife Carol Cardinal are here to prepare lunches and dinners. Welcome to the Windermere Room. Invermere’s newest restaurant, formerly known as the Greenery, is located in the Invermere Inn and chef Derek Standbrook and his wife Carol Cardinal are here to stay. “We want to put this place on the map for food,” Derek said. Th e Windermere Room opened June 28th after the previous restaurant in its location had been closed for fi ve years. Derek and Carol moved to Invermere from Waterton, Alberta, to make the Windermere Room legendary. In Waterton, Derek was a chef at the dining room at the Bayshore Inn located in Waterton National Park. Derek makes all of his food in-house, from soups to dressings, and entreés to desserts. “I take great pride in making as much myself as I possibly can,” he added. Th e layout of the room changes greatly from lunch to dinner. Around 4:45 p.m., Carol transforms the mood in the restaurant from casual lunch to elegant dinner. Th e menu also transforms, but one thing does remain the same. Th e price. Th e Windermere Room makes “fi ne dining” aff ordable. Th e Windermere room is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for dinner. July 6, 2007 The Columbia Valley Pioneer • 13 Public invited to summer garden party For all those garden enthusiasts, an old-fashioned Garden Party will be held on Saturday, July 28th from 2 to 5 p.m. at the home of Chester and Pat Allen in Radium. Pat kindly off ered to host the party in her lovely garden at 8038 McIntosh Loop Road in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Th e couple have cultivated an acre of land surrounding their house and this will be a spectacular venue for the event. Guests will be entertained by the musical talents of violinist Wanda Seel and harpist Sharon Morgan. Refreshments will be served by members of the local Canadian Cancer Society and you will recognize them in their bright blue aprons sporting the Society’s daff odil logo. Mrs. Allen has advised that her garden will be at its best at the end of July and she is very happy to host this event. Volunteers will be at the entrance to the property to collect the admission fee of $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12 years. Kids, start reading! Children aged six to 10 years old are invited to “Catch the Reading Bug” this summer at the Invermere Public Library! Children can explore the world of reading when they join the 2007 Summer Reading Club. Th is year, in the realm of literature, all participants can explore: Th ings Th at Bug You, Insects, Car Trips, Spy Bugs, Bugs to Butterfl ies, Doodlebugs, and Germy bugs. Children can join this free summerlong program and receive a reading log and bookmark to start them on their quest to catch the reading bug. Th e reading log is a fun way to keep track of the books that children read throughout the summer and each child can receive stickers and great prizes. At the end of the summer, children attending the club meetings who complete their reading log will receive a special Summer Reading Club medal in recognition of their achievement. Th is exciting and educational prov- ince-wide program encourages children to read over the summer holidays while school is out thus helping youngsters to maintain and develop the literacy skills that they acquired during the school year. Studies show that voluntary reading is the number one factor in establishing good reading habits in children. Th is is best accomplished when children get to choose their own books in a reading environment like the public library where there is a wide variety of books available to them. Th e Summer Reading Club reaches over 65,000 children in British Columbia every summer and is sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association with the assistance of the Public Library Services Branch, Ministry of Education. Contest deadline Monday Th e deadline is approaching for some young person to win a two-person tent, two canvas chairs and two sleeping bags. Th e contest closes at midnight on Monday, July 15th. Doug George of Invermere is generously off ering a prize to the boy or girl who can come up with an answer to the question: “Th e Best Th ing About Living in Canada.” Doug George, originally from the United States, became a Canadian citizen two years ago. He will accept entries of 100 words or less - that’s only about four or fi ve sentences. Any youth aged 16 or under as of Canada Day 2007 is eligible to enter. We will publish the winning entry in the newspaper.
