In so doing, we are in effect restricting the genus Cacatua to the Asian members of the Cacatua alba species-group (Cacatua alba and Cacatua moluccensis). Regarding the taxonomic position of the remaining extralimital species usually assigned to Cacatua, we have decided to utilise Eucacatua for the sulphurea super-species group, Ducorpsius for ducorps and maintained with reservations the genus Kakatoe for haematuropygius. A Classification of the Parrots (Aves: Psittaciformes) of Australia. turopygius Muller; see Gray 1859). Nom. Sup. Note that Mayr, Keast and Serventy (1964): Bull. Zool. Nom., 21: 372-374 in their validation of the genus Cacatua, dismissed Kakatoe Cuvier, 1800 (after 1798) as a missapplied name, as part of the unavailability of generic names applied between the use of Cacatua by Brisson in 1760 and Vieillot in 1817. Similarly, Wolters (1982) regarded Kakatoe as Nomen Supressum. In our decision on the use of a generic name for haematuropygia we have taken note of the advice of Mr. Murray D. Bruce who is currently a member of the Standing Committee of Ornithological Nomenclature and the one responsible for the compilation of a World List of Bird Generic Synonyms. He writes (in litt.) “I would not advocate using Kakatoe, even if it can be applied to another species. Hence a new name is appropriate in my opinion.” Using as Type Species: Psittacus philippinarum (=P. haematuropygius Muller), we believe there are grounds for the erection of a new generic name for haematuropygia, but we have at this time refrained from this course, instead opting to use the technically invalid generic name Kakatoe, and defining it monotypically on the basis of the species haematuropygia. We regard the genus Ducorpsius Bonaparte, 1857 as valid [see C. r. hebd. Seanc. Acad. Sci., Paris, 44: 537. Type Species: (By tautonomy) D. typus Bonaparte (=C. ducorpsii Pucheran= Plyctolophus ducorps Bonaparte)] and consider that Ducorpsius ducorps is the closest relative of the genus Kakatoe (Auctorum).
