Mabel Oswaldthad served not only the entire tenure ofGeorge Chapman, but also that of FrederickW. Ladue and nearly the entire tenure ofAlfred Aldridge. Gloria Metzger was in her25th year. Howard quickly recognized thevalue of their experience and their loyalty.Almost instantly, he made the decision to keepthe National Headquarters in Trenton andcommute to Pittsburgh on weekends to attendto his family. Yetat the helm of Theta Chi was the steady handof Howard Alter, who with George Kilavos asNational President during most of those years, called us to our core values. He was a friend toevery brother who sought his helping hand, and was once again the man to be countedupon. Never afraid to listen, but with a candorand courage of conviction that was integral tohis being, Howard led Theta Chi through thestorms. He did the same in the interfraternalworld as well, serving as president of theFraternity Executives Association and helpingheal the rift in the National InterfraternityConference, encouraging the return of thosewho had withdrawn. At his side was his assistantand the man he would groom to be hisreplacement, Dale Slivinske, another strongand courageous man.Howard Alter retired in 1984, becomingExecutive Director Emeritus and was succeededby Brother Slivinske.
