Parents who want to better understand what their children are
learning in classrooms can find answers in Parkway’s
course descriptions, expectations, goals and objectives;
which Missouri standards are addressed;
“essential questions” and vocabulary words;
a description of each instructional topic/unit.
children and classroom teachers throughout the year.
October 2009
Your PSH Library will be celebrating Teen Read Week October 18-24 th. Come to the
library to participate in the Once Upon a Time contest where you can guess what a PSH staff
member was reading when they were younger, or match a baby picture and book title with
the name of a PSH teacher or staff member. Prizes will be awarded. Hilarity is
complimentary.
Teen Read Week is an national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services
Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association.
Teen Read Week 2009 will be celebrated at thousands of public and school libraries, classrooms, and bookstores across the
country. Although teens realize the importance of reading, they have a huge menu of activities to choose from when deciding
how to spend their free time, and reading often gets lost in the shuffle. Reading skills get rusty when they are not used. The
National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reports that over the last 20 years there have been only modest gains in
reading achievement, and although there are many active literacy campaigns, very few efforts focus on teenagers.
-YALSA, What is Teen Read Week?
Read for the fun of it!
