I suggest thathe and Mayor Marshall Kamenahave not really been listening tothe community at large and theiracceptance of the petition wasmerely expedient, lest allowingLivermore citizens to vote onthe petition would have hungthe BART issue around theirnecks like an albatross at electiontime and severely risked theirelections. That is not the kindof “listening” we need here inLivermore.So how can we be confident?We can’t. Becauseof the weakening economy, moneyissues have forced teachersand administrators to cut activitiesand programs, particularlyin sports and Physical Educationclasses.According to the www.betterhealth.vic.govwebsite, in recentyears, obesity has been a big issuein grade school students; somecurrent statistics state it could beas high as 22%. Cutting sportsand exercise programs that canhelp to minimize health issuesamong the youth doesn’t makeany since to me. Only about 60%of students between the ages of 5and 14 participate in sports afterschool, which means that 40% ofstudents sit at home after schooldoing absolutely no exercise. Ifstudents can’t even do exercisein school, that number will growrapidly. The PUSD can only do somuch for the Pleasanton Schoolsso it is up to the community toreally act on this issue.The statistics won’t drop untilwe do something about them.theme of “MY way or the 580highway.” I want to think Livermoreis intelligent, thoughtfuland totally capable of makingpolitical decisions all on theirown.Locally, we have many mediaoptions to learn and becomefamiliar with candidates,viewpoints, and ballot choices.When I receive, via US mail,a non-requested postcard suggestingstrongly to vote for theirfavored candidates along withtheir personal view, that is informationenough. When that samepostcard DIRECTS me to NOTvote for other candidates citingTHEIR personal reasons that’smy clue that group is not lookingout for my best interests.I don’t need or appreciatetheir negative opinion aboutother candidates. Most of us areable to and interested in learning,discussing and researchingcandidates for our own personaldecision making. Voting in thiscountry is guaranteed private.There already is a feel of “organized”voting. They say, ”votefor this person for Mayor andthese people for council. Thesepositions should be singular,NOT group control oriented.Though I may agree withsome parts of a political groupsview doesn’t mean I am interestedin supporting that candidateand his other directives, blindly.Many people I have spoken toare interested in moving Livermorein a thoughtful and forwardthinking manner instead of “sameol, same ol”. OnlyLivermore voters can determinethe future of the UGB, not theIndependent, not the council, notany individual. The UGB guaranteesthat Livermore voters willdetermine North Livermore’sfuture. Hickman, Burger andTurner have each made it clearthat they support the UGB.Why is the Independent tryingto create a “UGB” issuewhen none exists? Because theIndependent is trying to divertattention away from the real issueof this campaign: the fact that thecurrent council is listening to aspecial interest group instead ofthe citizens of Livermore.\Kamena and Marchand votedto give millions of dollars oftaxpayers? money to LVPAC(Livermore Valley PerformingArts Center) to build, operateand own a 2,000 seat regionaltheater. Candidate Stewart Garysupported their actions. Theyignored citizens? requests toat least allow voters to weighin before putting the operatingbudget at risk.LVPAC is led by the council’smajor supporter, Joan Seppala,who is also the owner and publisherof the Independent. Shehas been a tireless promoter ofthis huge project and has resistedany suggestion that the publicshould be able to vote whetheror not they wish the City to goahead with the most expensiveproject it has ever undertaken;one that puts the city’s operatingbudget at risk.Kamena and Marchand alsovoted to put BART downtown.They strongly opposed those whowanted to allow voters to decideif BART on 580 was better forLivermore. The prospect of beingforced to appear on the Novemberballot in opposition to a votethey did not want to take resultedin their finally agreeing to BARTon 580. They did not want votersto decide. The Independent supportedtheir actions.Shouldn’t we be discussingthe fundamental issue of thiscampaign?
