Happy New Year! Our website at www.geminigems.hispeed.com has a new look and editor! Rich Olin is nowour virtual editor. Thank you, Dave Wheeler, our previous virtual editor, for your hard work and dedication!FROMTHEEDITORRich has made many enhancements the past several months. The Classified Ads webpage has a shortcut so youcan jump to the various sections. The ads are constantly changing for Charters, Miscellaneous Items for sale,Wanted items, and of course, Boats for sale. The News & Rendezvous webpage will be updated as we hearabout any rendezvous. There is a new webpage with Links to Owners Pages, Owners Manuals, and SuppliersLinks. The Gemini Model Info webpage contains manuals for several Gemini models and lists their model yearsand hull # range. We’re still looking for the manuals for models 3400, 105, and 105M. Please let us know if youwould share your manual to be scanned and posted on our website. The How do I join webpage now includesemail addresses and info about joining the Gemini_Cats listserve. The Gems Past Issues (Members Only) webpagehas a shortcut so you can jump to each year. A new member noticed some missing/broken links and anothermember requested that we have individual pages for some of the older newsletters for those of us still usingdial-up, so we took care of both those requests. Another new member and owner noticed we only had individualpages and not the complete newsletter for issues after 2002. We give a special thank you to Rick Barner, whodownloaded and created files with the complete newsletter to be viewed by those fortunate to have faster internetconnections. The Owner Member List (Members Only) webpage was updated in November with the current databaseinformation. We hope to update the webpage at various times throughout the year so members can monitortheir information and view information about other members and Geminis. As always, please let us know of any changes to your boat (hull #, boat name, berth), if you bought/sold aboat, or if your mailing address, phone, or email address changes. All correspondence for membership, classified ads, comments, and/or submitting articles should continue to be sent to me by email, phone, or postalservice. This info is located at various places in the newsletter. Please make all checks payable to Jill Argie and not to Gemini Gems. At our bank, a personal account ischeaper than a business account, so we are using a personal account for Gemini Gems. In a personal account, our bank will only accept checks written to a person.Be sure to check the expiration date printed on the label above your name and address. Please send your renewalcheck as soon as your subscription expires or before the expiration date. The deadline for submitting articles for the April newsletter is March 1st. It is very well sheltered, about 5-6 ft. deep in the center and no power boat wakes. Directions will come via email. (If weget more than 10 boats, however, we may move the location up the Severn River to Little RoundBay, but we’ll cross that bridge later.)Date: Memorial Day weekend, May 26th thru May 29th. We will be onsite on the afternoon ofFriday, May 26th.Activities: Nothing definite yet, but some ideas are, if we can arrange it, a tour of Thomas PointLight House, newly owned by the Annapolis Maritime Museum or the Chesapeake Bay FoundationHQ, one of the “greenest” buildings in America and a scientific marvel. Another day would bea Mr./Mrs. Fix It set of workshops, basically, different owners would spend 30-60 minutes showing/demonstratingan improvement or maintenance procedure which works for them.Food: The ever popular hors d’oeuvres on Saturday night. Maybe something another night. How to join in: Contact me at gary.greenip@verizon.net or 410-721-0050 to get on an email listfor details as we get closer to the event.Hosted by Gary and Janet Greenip, SINE DIE, Hull 680with co-hosts Ted and Mary Lesster, ISIS, Hull 7941454

Trudy E. Moore, a Berks County, PA artist, and former Gemini owner, has designed functional art forthe Gemini owner. Moore created hand-painted boxes with a marbleized design, painting a likenessof the Gemini on the top of the box. The lid also has room for the boat’s name, or, perhaps, theowner’s name, whichever appeals to you. The color scheme of the original is done in beiges andbrowns to remain neutral, but backgrounds can be any color you desire. The boxes come in twosizes...either 8x8 inch, or 7x12 inch. Placed somewhere near the salon or galley, these boxes wouldcome in handy to store smaller items that often roll around when “on the run”. Each box is signed bythe artist. You may also wish to request other designs, from florals, to nautical or beach scenes, to favoritepets. Ideas are limitless, and the artist is willing to work with you on creating your own unique design.Special prices for Gemini owners only:HAND PAINTED BOXESContributed by Trudy Moore, former Gemini ownerA great gift for the Gemini owner!Smaller square box, 8x8…………….….……………$35, plus shippingLarger oblong box, 7x12…………….….……………$40, plus shippingOrdering: Use the order form below, or simply hand write your request and send to:Trudy Moore, 260 Overlook Rd, Morgantown, PA 19543If you have further questions, the artist may be reached at trudyarts@aol.comor by calling (610) 404-2520.Name _____________________________________________Address __________________________________________________________________________________________Phone # _____________________________________________Box size _______ Square _______ OblongName to be included on box lid _____________________________Request for change in background color __________________A $10 deposit must accompany order. Cruising PlacesCRUISING THE BAHAMAS AND CARIBBEAN IN A GEMINIPart Four by Pat (Baasel) Tillis and John Tillis, ICON DUET, Hull 407 (3400)Part IVAlthough John and I had each gotten certifiedfor scuba, we prefer to just snorkel. Thereare so many nice snorkeling spots you can visiton your own with minimal equipment and expense.Probably the most outstanding snorkelingwithin the lesser Antilles was in the Tobago Caysin a wild-life protected park in the Grenadines, between St. Vincent and Grenada, but there wasalso a lot of good snorkeling in St. Lucia, Martinique,Antigua, as well as many places in the Virginsand Bahamas. I never tire of snorkeling andeven in places where there are not a lot of fishand snorkeling isn’t on the list of local attractions, you just never know what creature will suddenlyshow up. I’ve swum twice with a large ray swimmingjust beneath me, one of them a colorful eagleray. We see squid, octopus, eels, sea cucumbers, starfish, sea turtles, and on one occasionsome sea horses as well as countless varietiesof colorful fish, corals and sea fans. We’ve encounteredsharks while snorkeling in the Bahamas. If they are anything other than a nurseshark lazing on the bottom, I stay still as they goby and leave the area when they are out of sight, but we’ve never had a frightening experience. Inthe Bahamas we also saw a lot of barracudawhich never bothered me except for one time inthe Berry Islands when a five foot barracuda wasresting in the shade between our hulls, with histoothy mouth just a few feet from the swim steps. As long as I was looking him in the eye and sawhe was staying still I didn’t worry, but when Iclimbed the steps to get into the boat and couldno longer see what he was doing, I did scurry upthe steps! We’ve had many experiences of havingpods of dolphins swim with our boat, but I’venever managed to swim close to one. Most of the Lesser Antilles islands retainEnglish as their language along with Creole, butare independent nations that have elected toshare a common currency, the EC dollar. Guadeloupeand the Saints (one nation, but several islands)and Martinique are actually two departmentsof the nation of France as Hawaii andAlaska are states of the U.S.A. Here they notonly speak French and use the Euro and Frenchpostage etc., but they also use almost entirelyproducts produced in France. This makes forspecial pleasures and frustrations when shoppingin the French Islands. We kept our boat in Grenada from springof 2000 to December of 2002. We had canvaswork added to the boat in Grenada. We addedfull battens to the main, had both sails washedand stitched, had lazy jacks and a sail pack installed. We are pleased with all these additions:the sail handles better with the full battens andwe can lower sail without having to roll and tiethe sail on a rocking deck before entering theharbor. We had a full set of custom-fitted cockpitcushions made with a flow-through foam thatdries quite quickly. We had our master stateroomqueen sized mattress segmented so we couldfold it in three parts if necessary to dry the mattress. One year in St. Lucia on the way south, askidoo skimmed past our boat and threw itsrooster-tail spray right through our stateroomhatch and soaked our mattress. We couldn’t getthe mattress out of the boat to air it out!We installed a manual windlass on theforedeck before starting the journey north, just incase we should need it. So far, despite a severedrotator cuff and consequent shoulder reconstructionsurgery a couple years ago, John stillprefers to haul by hand the 35 pound Delta withits 106’ of 5/16” (8mm) chain and 150 ‘ 9/16” nylonrode. I guess I should mention that webeefed up our ground tackle again after our anchorline parted and we began drifting in the middleof the night in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia. At thattime, we had 66’ of chain and 150‘ of rode andthought we were anchored in an all sand bottom. It turns out there are a few coral rocks in that anchorageand after several weeks in the same1456

spot, they sawed through our rode. FortunatelyJohn is as sensitive to boat motions during thenight as a mother is to her baby’s cry, so hewoke up before we had drifted far. We’d managedto miss all the boats anchored behind usas we floated back through the anchorage. Thenext day a friend pulled up our anchor chain sowe were able to recover the anchor. We missed a year of cruising becauseJohn broke four bones in his ankle, steppinginto an un-grated drainage ditch at night in theunlit parking lot of the new Grenada nationalstadium. He had to fly home to have it set. Bythe time he could put weight on it, we decided itwasn’t worth putting the boat in the water thatyear. Many boaters stay in Grenada, Trinidad,Tobago, or Venezuela during hurricane season, because these islands south of 12 degreeshave been considered by insurance companiesto be outside the hurricane belt. Whathappened on Grenada in 2004 was shocking.Fortunately for us, we have kept our boat thepast two years at Rodney Bay in St. Lucia sowe were not in Grenada when Ivan took its terribletoll. I should also add that we had friendswhose boats were in dry storage in Grenadaduring Ivan whose boat did survive. We havetalked to others whose boats were anchoredduring Ivan in Grenada who survived. Manyboats suffered more from the post-Ivan lootingthan from the hurricane itself. Nevertheless, many boats were lost in 2004 in Grenada. However, if worrying about hurricanes is keepingyou from cruising, look realistically at theprobability of getting killed by a car in yourhome town versus the likelihood of being killedin the Caribbean in a hurricane. Believe me,you’re safer out here. Besides you are breathingpollution free air and, if you have a watermaker, probably drinking water more pure thanmany bottled waters. Boaters are rarely sleepdeprived except during brief periods whenkeeping watches during long passages withshort crew lists! Most of us go to sleep earlyand sleep as long as our constitutions desire.Living aboard in sparkling clear and clean watersis a health promoting lifestyle. We stopped to enjoy the great weatherand the sociability of the large American/Canadian cruising community in St. Lucia andMartinique for two seasons before continuingthe trip back toward home. Saint Anne was thehub until this year when the Euro’s rise againstthe dollar made Martinique too expensive formany of us. Most of the boaters who would ordinarilyspend months at St. Anne in Martiniquehave either stayed in St. Lucia or gone toVenezuela this season. Venezuela is the leastexpensive area in the Caribbean, but also theone where security and safety require the mostprecautions, since their terrible inflation hasbeen associated with poverty and crime. TheVenezuelan islands and gulfs have been apopular cruising grounds for years. Our originalplan was to end our outward cruise in Venezuela, but we stopped at Grenada because of acombination of factors including John and Ihaving had four major operations between us inthe last four years, the safety issues in Venezuela, and having acquired an 87 acre farm inOhio. We are slowly working our way backnorth west, hoping to enjoy many great sailswith the wind at our backs instead of motorsailingwith pinched sails as often happened in orderto make the next harbor before dark whencoming southeast through the islands. Thisyear, after 8 years, more than 1,000 hours and5,000 miles of faithful service in salt water, our4-stroke Honda 25hp main engine had electricproblems. We are awaiting delivery of a newMercury 4-stroke 40hp big foot (high thrust)with extra long shaft. Our Dometic refrigeratorlost its ammonia and also gave up the ghostthis year after 11 years of faithful service. Afterlooking at possible replacements, we’ve decidedto get a rebuilt ammonia refrigeration kitfor our Dometic. Other refrigerators didn’t fit thespace except one all electric brand. The allelectricrefrigerators, despite their increasedefficiency and despite the larger (18 amp) alternatorcoming on our Mercury engine, wouldn’tallow us our carefree use of electric appliancesin wintry short days with cloudy weather thatwe can enjoy knowing that the propane willkeep the refrigerator going.1457

When we get back to the Virgin Islands,we will be required to take moorings in St. Johnwhere we were previously allowed to anchor. This is our second reason to advise all whodream of cruising to get out and do it as soon asyou can. The cruising life as we have known it isprobably slowly on its way out of existence justlike the fish and conch populations. There aremore megayachts every year, both motor yachtsand huge sailing yachts, that require marina slipsdesigned for huge boats. The move toward cloggingthe best harbors with slips and mooringfields to the extent that no anchoring is possibleis beginning in Florida and Virgin Islands. Freeanchorages are going the way of free RV parkingin the U.S.A.—it’s a low cost lifestyle that is beingslowly squeezed out of existence. Locals deriveincome from marinas and moorings where theyrent space. These changes are starting, buthaven’t happened yet to a significant extent inthe Caribbean. So come on down! We would behappy to answer questions at iconduet@juno.combetween May and Novemberwhen we are in Ohio.We are currently debating the merits ofselling the boat when we get back to the states inorder to be able to spend some winters landcruisingin Australia and New Zealand during our70's versus keeping the boat in Florida and continuingto use Icon Duet as our main winter homewhile we escape from snow in Ohio. When we dodecide to sell Icon Duet, like most cruisers, wewill sell our boat with all its added equipment includingthe dinghy and motor, safety equipment, navigational equipment, and housekeeping itemssuch as linens which fit the beds and pots andpans which fit the stove. I bought a new boat in1994 after looking at several used boats, becauseI am not mechanically inclined and Ithought that buying a new boat would be likebuying a new car, with very little expenses forupkeep in the first five years. What I learned isthat it is much more expensive outfitting a newboat with new equipment than it would havebeen to keep a fully equipped used boat in goodrepair. We’ve had a wonderful time cruising inthe Bahamas and Caribbean and will alwaystreasure the memories of these years travelingthrough tropical islands on Icon Duet. Editor’s Note: Parts I, II, and III of Cruising the Bahamas and Caribbean in a Gemini by Pat (Baasel) Tillis and John Tilliswere published in Volumes 89, 90, and 91 of the Gemini Gems newsletters.Thank you, Pat and John, for sharing your fascinating cruising experience! We’d love to hear from other members who would like to share their experiences aboutfavorite cruising areas, gunkholes, and races they’ve won (or lost). ☺We’re always looking for articles with Geminis in exciting places around the world! Please send your articles and photos to geminigemseditor@hotmail.comGCOA BurgeesIf you would like a burgee, pleasesend your $29 check to:Jill Argie4914 Laurie LaneWoolford MD 21677-13331458

RESULTS OF THE LIGHTNING SURVEYBy Bob Hickernell, MY GEM AN I, Hull 325 (3200)In the last issue of Gems and on the web list serve I asked those who have been hitby lightning to respond to a list of questions. I had seven responses, one of whichhas been struck three times which I counted separately, bringing the total to nine.About one half believed that the initial contact point was the VHF antenna at themasthead, one indicated the shore power, and the rest felt it hit the boat itself. The highest cost of repairs was $12,000, the least $2800, and the average $9,200.No one was displeased with their insurance company. The electronics damaged and the number of respondents are:Nav-5 or tri-data systems 8Auto pilot 6Navigation or anchor lights 5VHF radio and antenna 5Battery charger 5Fume detector 5Solar panel or controller 4Refrigerator 3Radar 2Batteries 2There were miscellaneous other items with one or two responses and lots of fuseswere replaced. Two people reported minor hull damage, pinhole leaks of a few gallons per day.The location in the U.S. was: three - Chesapeake Bay, four - Florida (three of whichare the same owner), one - Ohio, and one - Michigan.Concerning the ability to motor afterwards: one - needed batteries to start, one -Tohatsu was damaged, one - starter motor, and two - alternators were not charging.Six said their Gem was in the water, three on a lift, three that there were trees orother masts nearby. One reported that he had an ion dissipater installed and that even though the boatwas struck the damage was at the low end of the scale. An ion dissipater is a deviceinstalled at the masthead which the people selling it claim that will neutralize thecharge on the boat and lightning will strike somewhere else. The theory has mostlybeen discredited by the scientific community, there is lots of information on the net. 1459

A couple of years ago, my children presented me with a copy of Nobeltec Visual Navigation Suite asa combination Father’s Day and Birthday gift complete with charts to cover most of the Pacific Northwest.I tinkered with it on and off until this past March, when I decided to take the boat from Portlandup the Washington coast to Victoria, BC to be part of the 62nd annual Swiftsure Race (that is a differentstory) over Memorial Day Weekend, then return to Portland. After delivery of Water Strider in November 2003, I did not rush to equip her with radar or GPS, but Iwanted both for the trip North. After wrestling with a few choices and getting some advice along theway, I opted to buy the Nobeltec radar system, mounted on the mast. It called for enhancing the Nobeltecsoftware to include the radar display. That let me use my big hunker of a laptop (17” screen) todisplay radar and two views of charts: one close, one farther out, side by side. I elected to not pop forthe extra $$$ to enjoy radar over chart. It was all I could handle just to read all that stuff! For the initial trip one of my sailing buddies constructed a temporary stand which we strapped thecomputer onto and secured to the top of the refrigerator. It allowed easy viewing from the wheel, butthe computer had to be detached and turned around for interior viewing. After looking at commercial stands that would allow swiveling the computer out of the way or to theinterior and looking at the spindly stands (remember my hunker laptop), the quest started for somethingsturdy, but inexpensive. In the end, sturdy and cheap won out! This photo shows the basic bill of material:A sheet of ¾” finish plywood that was in a shed out back when we built a new home on our propertyover 30 years ago. (Free)A piece of 1” x 2” trim that was intended for construction of extra wine racks for my alternate amateurproject that I decided were not needed, since they had laid around for 10 years or so. (so depreciated,it is essentially free, but call it $2.00)A 7” boat seat pedestal ($11.99)A swivel seat clamp ($19.99)Keeping your Gem a GemLAPTOP STANDBy David Page, WATER STRIDER, Hull 828 (105Mc)3 screws to attach the 1” x 2” trim to the face boardabove the refrigerator (pulled from a shop nuts, bolts, and screws container … let’s call it $.50)4 nuts and bolds to attach the swivel to the pedestal(stainless. I bought some stuff I didn’t need but willcost it to this project at $16.54)1 spray can of black semigloss paint to turn the plywoodand trim into an approximate match. ($2.14)1461

Total investment:Materials: $53.16Labor: free (hahaha)These photos shows the installed result. I’ll report back, if the system fails.Since there is very little need for radar and chartplotting on the Columbia River, the real plus for me isthat by removing three screws, I can carry the stand home and have it out of the way until needed. The chart plotter and radar screen are part of the laptop, so they do not remain to tempt thieves. Avery nice compromise.Anyone wanting more down and dirty details can contact me at davepage@pacifier.com.David PageWater Strider, #8281462

GENERATOR POWERBy Paul & Peggy Cobb, QUIET PLACE, Hull 766 (105Mc)Our 105Mc is a cool place at anchor, during those hot buggy nights. We set our Honda EU2000i Generatoron the port step on top of a “Tile layersknee pad”. It is a red plastic board withfoam so it cushions the “tile layersknees” and our generators vibration. The board extends a little over the stepedge but, with a few 2x4’s cut andstacked to support the edge that hangsover, it is quite stable. We then use a shorepower pig tail andshort extension cord to plug it into theshorepower connection of the boat.A small 5300 btu AC is mounted in the windowover the helm station and is supported by a 2x4cut to fit the window size for the base of AC anda short piece angled from the little shelf behindthe helms wheel to the bottom of AC.When bad weather comes, we cover the generatorwith a plastic storage container with one endcut off for the hot exhaust. The generator runs for 10 hours on a tankfull andwe sleep much better at night.1463

A little hint for those that have the Mermaid16,500 btu AC. If you start the AC before thesaltwater cooling pump, the generator willtake the startup surge, when the generatorlevels off, start your saltwater AC pump. Wehave connected the saltwater pump by use ofextension cord plugs so we can unplug andplug it in after the initial start up surge haspassed. We only use this method to cool theboat down in the evening and then we run thewindow AC to keep it cool. Gas storage iskept in 2 gal containers in the anchor compartmentwith the lid propped open for ventilation.Stay cool!Paul & Peggy Cobb1464

KEEPING YOUR SPEED SENSORPADDLEWHEEL CLEANBy Tim Argie, LINKS, Hull 747 (105Mc)You finally get a chance to go sailing! Whether your idea of a good time is going to a secluded anchorage, visiting a new town, or just a casual day of passing monohulls, having a working speed sensorwill make your day easier. In most places where people keep their boats stuff grows on any stationary solid surface that's underwater. For all of you who travel on your boats and never stay in the same place for more than a weekat a time, the stationary problem is solved. I envy all of you and will be joining you soon. Some boatsare stored on a boatlift. This solves the under water problem. For the rest of us, our boat sits in thewater until our schedule, boss, or other commitments allow us to get away for some fun. For us poorfolk the best way to keep the speed sensor working is to get it out of the water. If you just bought your Gemini, you may be reluctant to make a one-inch hole in the bottom of it. It'sreally no big deal. There is a rubber flap in the hole for the speed sensor that keeps most of the wateron the correct side of the boat. This isn't waterproof but with a couple of rags and a quick switch you'llknow your boat speed and have a dry bilge. Before you remove the speed sensor put a rag fore and aft of the sensor. Be sure that you have thebung handy. Unscrew the cap nut that secures the sensor while holding the sensor down with yourother hand. Thesensor seals witho-rings, not thehand nut, so holdingit down willkeep it from leakinguntil you’reready to make theswitch. Pick upthe bung, makingsure that the arrowon the toppoints to the bowof the boat. Pullout the sensor, and push in thebung. Make sureit is seated properlyby giving it agentle twist. If it isproperly seated itwon't twist and itwon't leak. Handtightening the cap nut is all that is necessary. Replacing the speed sensor is done the same way. Itis best not to make the switch and immediately leave the boat. We normally remove the speed sensor, wipe up any water that got in the bilge, and check the bilge 15 minutes later to be sure it is stilldry.1465

We’ve found that in the central Chesapeake Bay, the speed sensor will quit working if the boatisn’t used for a week or sometimes even less. If we know that we won’t be using the boat for afew days, we remove the speed sensor and replace it with the bung. It’s much easier to make aquick switch than to scrape barnacles andslime from the speed sensor paddlewheel.Occasionally putting siliconegrease or petroleum jelly on the o-ringswill keep things working smoothly. Now that your speed sensor is clean, it’swise to check your calibration.
