BULLETIN 16feb10Notes on the updated and revised AMECA brake friction material Edge Code listings.A number of States and Provinces are developing environmental testing criteria for brake friction materialand AMECA has revised the Edge Code matrix to accommodate manufacturers’ future compliance tothese new regulations.Asbestos* - the suggested test for the presence of asbestos is National Institute for Standards & Testing(NIST) polarized light microscopy (PLM 150-3) test **. The suggested Edge Code marking forsuccessfully-compliant brake friction material is the addition of a check mark () immediately after theAMECA-assigned Edge Code for that product.NVLAP Accredited Laboratories for the Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) Test Method.*http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/pubs/help.html**NIST Handbook 150-3:2006 NVLAP Bulk Asbestos Analysis“Other” substances - certain States have legislation under development which aim to regulate the amounts(by weight percentage - Wt.%) of specific substances used in the manufacture of automotive brake frictionmaterial. The redesigned AMECA List of Compliant Devices includes a number of additional Edge Codeplace-holders. As of this publication no NIST-recognized ANSI-type testing regime has been identified.This page will continue to be revised as the regulatory language is developed and administrative claritydevolves.
