We are preparing hundreds of women <strong>for</strong>construction jobs and providing assistance to apprenticeshipand job-training programs across the U.S. topromote women’s employment in this growing sector.Green Jobs are <strong>Women</strong>’s Jobs: WOW’s GREEN(Generating Real Economic Equity Now) Initiative is atthe <strong>for</strong>efront of ef<strong>for</strong>ts to ensure women are not left outof the green jobs movement. WOW contributed to theGreen Jobs Bill and is now conducting Green Institutesaround the country to help job-training programs promotewomen’s employment in the expanding greeneconomy. The first was held in Washington DC in 2009and the second was held in Alabama in May 2010.WOW also co-authored “Why Green is Your Color: AWoman’s Guide to a Sustainable Career” through anaward from the U.S. Department of Labor. The Guide– soon to be in hard copy and online – provides in<strong>for</strong>mationon hiring needs, training programs, and entrepreneurialopportunities in green industries nationwide.Our website’s GREEN Space is a source <strong>for</strong>research, programs, legislative in<strong>for</strong>mation, newsletters,upcoming events, and best practices related to womenin the green economy. It showcases our work and providesa clearinghouse of in<strong>for</strong>mation <strong>for</strong> the field. Thereports and analyses housed on this site include: WOW’sreport <strong>for</strong> women’s foundations – Creating Opportunity<strong>for</strong> <strong>Women</strong> in the Green Economy – that suggests howfoundations can address the issue of women and greenjobs in their own work; the development of languageto support a Green Construction Careers DemonstrationProgram in clean energy; and WOW’s Green JobsTraining Program Fact Sheets.WOW’s Southeast GREEN InstituteDespite the worst tornados in decades, morethan 70 state partners came to Birmingham,Alabama, April 28 to 29, <strong>for</strong> WOW’s SoutheastGREEN Institute. The event welcomed new partnersinvolved in green job initiatives in the eightSoutheastern states (Arkansas, Alabama, Florida,Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina,and Tennessee) as well as representatives of ourPathways Out of Poverty project partners(in Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Milwaukee,and Philadelphia). The two-day event provideda <strong>for</strong>um <strong>for</strong> partners to network, share ideas andmeet national experts who provided models ofpromising practices on issues such as sector-basedinitiatives and communication strategies.<strong>Women</strong> and Work: Working with Jobs <strong>for</strong> theFuture under a U.S. Department of Labor Pathways outof Poverty grant, WOW is providing technical assistanceto organizations in five cities across the country to developgreen job training programs, help recruit women intothese programs and ensure all trainees advance alongcareer paths that lead to economic security.Moving Survivors of Domestic Violence towardEconomic Security: With funding from the U.S. Departmentof Justice’s Office of Violence against <strong>Women</strong>,WOW’s Economic Security <strong>for</strong> Survivors Project is helpingsurvivors of domestic violence and sexual assaultsbuild the economic security they need to create a newfuture where they are safe and independent. This uniqueRecovery Act project focuses on equipping transitionalhousing staff and state STOP Administrators with toolsto introduce survivors to jobs that pay good wagesand the kinds of education and training they need tocompete <strong>for</strong> them.<strong>Wider</strong> <strong>Opportunities</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Women</strong> 2009-2011 9
