INTRODUCTION• It is vital to consider good practice in the assessmentmethods that are employed by academicprogrammes offering career guidance andcounselling (CGC) education.• Assessment is recognised as having ‘powerfulleverage’ (Shay, 2008) on both student learning andthe teaching curriculum. It is a challenge to ensurethat assessment methods employed are mosteffective to measure performance and alsoimportantly to support new learning.
COMPETENCE-BASED ASSESSMENT IN HIGHEREDUCATION• The basis of assessment• Norm-referenced assessment (NRA) ranks studentperformance in order, so students are compared withone another.• Criterion- referenced assessment (CRA) provides agrade that indicates what a student has learned andhow well their performance matches criteria thathave been already set. (Biggs, 2003).• Criterion- referenced assessment is constructed oncompetences.
