5. Reservoir Simulation – Pro’s & Cons• Both the type of users, their backgrounds and their expectations have changes.• So too have project expectations about simulation. At the present time reservoir simulationenjoys as a “Jekyll and Hyde" reputation. ( You wont see this written down in <strong>SPE</strong> literature)a) On one hand: Every major reservoir will have a reservoir simulation model ( or several) developed forit. Reservoir simulation may underpin every decision made, orb) Reservoir simulation considered a necessary task – but project managers already know thedevelopment plan to use, along with well numbers and placing. Reservoir simulation “leads from therear” ( and often provides over-optimistic answers in time frames too long to make any differenceusing over-complicated models)• Why don’t we talk about a) vs. b) more ?• Is there evidence for these views ?• If b) is occurring how did we get there ? What are the tell-tale signs• How does it impact career development ?• Should I choose “simulation specialist” as a career choice ?• Should I outsource reservoir simulation jobs ( and not do it)• NOTE: I’m still a believer in a) BUT I’m concerned that there is too much of b) happening.The development timeline helps explain.• Tension between simplicity and complexity• Reservoir are incomprehensibly complex• We will never have enough detail/information• Radical simplification needed• Reservoir simulation studies generally fail when clear objectives are lacking• What flow mechanisms to include : What to leave out.CTSOR 26Pty of xx Ltd

Black Oilmodels very fast and can modelmany type s of displacement• Can integrate many diverse sets ofdata• Can couple geomechanics, 4Dseismic etc• Relative permeability effects canbe incorporated• Reservoir simulation includesmaterial balance for freeCon’s• Conventional simulation studiesoften take too long & lose focus• Despite desire for turn-key models –simulation still requires reasonableskill• Not all data is consistent. User needsto prioritise data and resolveinconsistencies.• Relative permeability data isgenerally misunderstood by the enduser.• Many users don’t do an upfrontmaterial balance study ( worse still itis never taught in res.
