BALOO'S BUGLE Page 11Most animals are more sensitive than we are to changes in the pressure, temperature, and humidity of theair. Some changes in the weather, such as the low pressure and increased humidity before a storm, may makeanimals uncomfortable, restless, and noisy. Their behavior tells us the weather is soon to change. What is the Mexican weather report?Chili today and hot tamale.Weather HumorIt was autumn, and the Indians on the remote reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going tobe cold or mild. Since he was a new Indian Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets, and when he looked at the sky, he couldn't tell what the weather was going to be. Nevertheless, to be on thesafe side, he replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of thevillage should collect wood to be prepared. But also being a practical leader, after several days he got an idea.He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked,"Is the coming winter going to be cold?""It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold indeed," the meteorologist at the weather serviceresponded. So the Chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more wood in order to be prepared. Aweek later he called the National Weather Service again."Is it going to be a very cold winter?""Yes," the man at National Weather Service again replied, "it's going to be a very cold winter."The Chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of wood they could find. Two weeks later he called the National Weather Service again."Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?""Absolutely," the man replied. "It's going to be one of the coldest winters ever.""How can you be so sure?" the Chief asked. The weatherman replied, "The Indians are collecting wood like crazy!"Although he was a qualified meteorologist, Hopkins ran up a terrible record of forecasting for the TV newsprogram. He became something of a local joke when a newspaper began keeping a record of his predictions andshowed that he'd been wrong almost three hundred times in a single year. That kind of notoriety was enough toget him fired. He moved to another part of the country and applied for a similar job. One blank on the jobapplication called for the reason for leaving his previous position. Hopkins wrote, "The climate didn't agree withme."The Michaels family owned a small farm in Canada, just yards away from the North Dakota border. Theirland had been the subject of a minor dispute between the United States and Canada for generations. Mrs.Michaels, who had just celebrated her ninetieth birthday, lived on the farm with her son and threegrandchildren. One day, her son came into her room holding a letter. "I just got some news, Mom," he said. "Thegovernment has come to an agreement with the people in Washington. They've decided that our land is reallypart of the United States. We have the right to approve or disapprove of the agreement. What do you think?""What do I think?" his mother said. "Jump at it! Call them right now and tell them we accept! I don't think Icould stand another one of those Canadian winters!"It was so hot today I saw a robin picking earthworms out of the ground with a pair of tongs. What happens when the fog lifts in California? UCLA.
