A PLEA FROM THE HEART<br />

Welcome to <strong>Charmouth</strong>. You can always tell you have<br />

arrived because of the plethora of bonfire smoke escaping<br />

into the atmosphere, whatever the weather, be it at the<br />

height of summer or the cold autumn and <strong>winter</strong> months.<br />

Why is it that these bonfires are lit without any due<br />

consideration for neighbours, (especially if washing is being<br />

dried or those who suffer with chest complaints live<br />

nearby) and they become the plague that so infuriates all<br />

and sundry?<br />

No one minds the occasional fire as long as the material<br />

being burned is dry, combustible material and not still<br />

dripping with sap, as seems to be the norm for the<br />

majority of garden refuse ignited, together with the<br />

occasional noxious items added.<br />

Householders should be aware that weather conditions<br />

dictate how the smoke from your bonfire will affect your<br />

neighbours. If the air is still, especially in the late afternoon<br />

or evening, the smoke will linger. A good, hot fire will drive<br />

the smoke and fumes upwards, so be a good neighbour<br />

and please:<br />

� Only burn dry material.<br />

� Never burn household rubbish containing plastic, foam,<br />

paint or rubber.<br />

� Never use old engine oil of any flammable liquid to<br />

assist in intensifying the fire, it is dangerous and could<br />

result in you being severely injured as a result.<br />

� Avoid lighting fires in unsuitable weather conditions<br />

such as damp and still days.<br />

� Avoid times when the wind will blow smoke over into<br />

your neighbour’s garden or onto roads which would<br />

result in causing poor visibility.<br />

� Especially avoid burning when people wish to enjoy<br />

their gardens in the fine weather.<br />

� Never leave a fire unattended or leave it to smoulder.<br />

Finally, although there are no bylaws concerning the<br />

burning of garden refuse, regular smoky bonfires or even<br />

a single one which is very polluting, could be regarded as a<br />

Statutory Nuisance and could result in a legal notice being<br />

served on you by West Dorset District Council.<br />

In light of the ‘Big Society’ being to the fore, is it perhaps<br />

time for a community composting scheme to be formed in<br />

our village where we could contribute our garden waste<br />

and therefore reduce the amount of smoke disturbing us<br />

when we’re out enjoying our gardens throughout the year?<br />

Anyone on the council have any forward thinking ideas in<br />

respect of all the above ?<br />

JET SKIS<br />

I've never really been a campaigner for causes but I<br />

learned today that West Dorset Council have decided to<br />

allow Jet Skis to use Lyme and West Bay harbours next<br />

year.<br />

I hate the idea that Lyme and <strong>Charmouth</strong> could be turned<br />

into Exmouth, Southend or Clacton and think that this is a<br />

step along the way. As you can see I have emailed our<br />

Councillor (for Stanton St Gabriel) to let her know my<br />

views. If you share them, please do what you can to raise<br />

the issue in the press or with the Council.<br />

NATURE V NURTURE<br />

Just read the current (Autumn) <strong>Shoreline</strong> and I wanted to<br />

say how much I enjoyed it. There was so much of interest<br />

and a good variety of articles - I particularly enjoyed this<br />

issue’s Nature v Nurture as I am a twin and my sister and<br />

I have been participating in the Twin Studies at St<br />

Thomas's Hospital for over 15 years now. Despite often<br />

being regarded as a single unit during childhood we have<br />

developed quite differently and Martin Beckers' interesting<br />

discussion has shown how complex the subject is. Neil<br />

Mattingly's History of the Court was also excellent as were<br />

ALL the other items.<br />
