COMMODORE’S REPORTDominic Papaluca reports:Hello Members,Before pung pen-to-paper, I took the me to readmy Christmas report last year. It was an illuminangexperience. I talked a year ago about the problemswe’ve been having with turnover of staff in thefuncons area, the 5 year plan, website, phonesystems, ranking of capital works projects – there wasa lot to get right. I’m happy to report that one yearon…we are just about there. The funcons area is really kicking goals for the club(financially speaking – not only have we stemmed thelosses – it actually makes a posive contribuon tothe cashflow of the club now). We sll have issueswith losing staff in this area…but I think that ispart-and-parcel of the industry. We have a great crewin place at the moment…and all seems to be goingwell. In fact, it is going so well, that we are looking atproviding Colin some extra room so he can plate upand keep everything warm with the larger funconsthat are coming through.Website, phones and the weekly emails to membershave also improved the communicaons around theclub. The new General Manager has some ideasabout how to further improve the communicaonsbetween members and the club – watch this space. We are now set to incorporate the capital works into aprogram of structured maintenance and costs throughthe five year plan. We are working on this right nowand will have it out prior to the half yearly meeng ofmembers – so you all have me to digest its contents.I signed the applicaon for H Jey on Tuesday 4 thDecember and it should be lodged with Swan RiverTrust by the me you read this newsleer. We areexpecng the SRT to come back to us with a range ofcondions regarding the car park and possibly the“old chestnut” of the riverbed lease may come upagain. We will keep you informed of where that is allgoing, once we know. The coage demolion is set for January 2013. Ourplan is to leave the area grassed for now.Management, Administraon and GovernanceDoug Hannaford is seling in to the role of GeneralManager. Obviously it will take some me for him tofind out “who’s who and what’s what – but I like theway that he thinks.FinanceThe Club’s finances are stable and we are in greatshape. We do not burn as much cash on a monthlybasis as we used to – because external funcons aremaking a healthy contribuon to the boom line. Weare on top of the A-West Jey maintenance fund andthe club is looking in good financial shape. We cannow start looking towards the future in terms ofimprovements and jey building.Capital Works ProgramOne of the burgeoning issues we have come across, isthe state of the ladies toilets upstairs and thecondion of the downstairs toilets (we get negavecomments on the Funcons-feedback formsconsistently nowadays). The loss of the men’schange-room area is making it difficult for our dinghysailors too. So, we are going to look at pushing theseup the list if possible. As menoned above, H Jeyapplicaon is submied, so we will deal with SwanRiver Trust requirements as a maer of priority. Wewould like to be driving piles as early as possible in thenew year. Here is the table of projects that we have inthe pipeline – ranked accordingly. While we are on Capital Works, I would like to thankBill Harding for arranging the trolleys to be painted,Peter Tate for diving and inspecng A West Jey andPeter Stanley/Rob Depiazzi on the great job they didon fixing C jey. If there are dive-qualified membersout there who’d like to volunteer to help clean up theseabed around the jees, please contact the club andput your name down – we are thinking of holding abusy-bee soon. Please look over the page...

MEMBERSHIP REPORTClaremont Yacht Club would like to say a big welcome to our new Members of the clubfrom October and November !

I HEARD IT BLOWIN IN THE WIND“FROM THE START BOX” - Saturday 17 th NovemberOn Saturday aernoon the Start Team had quite brisk winds for Racing. The Start crew had a hecc me when the pin end buoy for the start brokeloose and had to be reset, we only lost 10 minutes, aer which 14 yachts gotoff to a good start. The winds dropped off slightly for a me, then picked up for an excing finish.JacquiGood news. Insaable was first over the linein the second race of the SS22 statechampionship, run by RFBYC on Saturday24th November, which gives us two wins intwo heats.James Pearson“VIEW FROM THE START BOAT” - Sunday 18 th November 2012Today was a day for the experts. There were 26 boats signed on for dinghy sailing thismorning. Only 10 of those completed the course and the majority ended up swimmingone or more mes in the blustery condions. The forecast was for a 15 knot South-Westerly with gusts up to 20 knots… and that isexactly what we got. Gusts a shade under 21 knots were the highest seen on the handheld anemometer on the start boat.Hats off to all those who finished and especially to Gaye who sailed steadily onthrough the worst of the gusts and, despite some difficules with less than100 meters to go, regained control and momentum and crossed the finish accompaniedby an exuberant blast on the hooter.Well done everybody but special thanks have to go to Rob, Graham and Bob who hadtheir work cut and who ended up as wet And cold as any of the Laser sailors.Richard ReganOn Water Report-Saturday 10 th NovemberSaturday 10 th November was set to be a fun day of racing with nice windand no rain at first. The race was a handicap start in a westerly direconfrom the club on course 7. We got the jump on the always reliable andconsistent Serana, but they and Beaujolais got past us in the first turn atthe day bouys. When negoang the stronger winds near Freshy we too had a sail failureand had some problems, but Ken and Angela sorted it out just in me beforewe nearly ran aground. We made it out of it and connued with therest of the fleet making some extra ground on us. Don in Shea Rua caughtus up, but we managed to get away.Lyn Weir - Amazin’GraceDinghies - Sunday 2 nd December 20127 full rigs and 9 radials started in 10 to 12 knot winds that were sufficientfor experienced sailors and perfect for the less experienced sailors. Unlikesome previous weeks no one was capsizing and the fleet all kept reasonablyclose. Several Mirrors enjoyed the day sailing also.It was a very ght start with a short distance between the starter boat andbuoy. What I thought was going to be a reasonable start for myself, cameundone when I noced I was on a collision course with Sco coming towardsme on starboard. Thanks again to the volunteers who organize the racing and help keep ussafe.Rob HeyesDiscover Sailing Day-Sunday 4 th NovemberOnce again the weather dominated the sailing withcycles of freezing rain and brilliant sunshine all morning.Only the magnificent crew of Beaujolais providedour Discover Sailors with ride on a yacht in horriblecondions and did not hesitate when a third grouparrived at 11.40 for a sail.Robert Boyke provided all comers with a basic flaredemonstraon at 10.45.The New CYC General Manager came down to makesure everything was OK. Many thanks to the bar staffwith their effort on sausage sizzle as it made our Discoverer’sand the Dinghy sailor’s day. The bouncycastle was big hit with the young visitors. A total of 19visitors, with 9 experiencing sailing.Skippers Please make these visitors welcome whenthey come down for another sail.Rob Jeffery.Twelve boats sailed in the 2 nd SS27 State Heat atSOPYC last Saturday,24 th November. CYC's 'Georgie' was 4th across theline and 2nd on handicap.Jim Murray

SAIL REPORTDean Caple reports:With 6 weeks already gone in the 2012/2013season, with December tradional a month ofstrong breezes it was no secret that there would bea few hard days sailing. Unfortunately parcipaonhas been down a bit and we are hoping thatskippers and crews can find some more me in thenew year to come down and sail. The good news isthat Jeff Engeldow has brought Xanadu and wehope to see another SS22 sailing at the club verysoon. The other good news is that the club hasrecently purchased 2 second hand 420 dinghies tostart sail training with. The plan is to deliver courseson a Saturday mornings in the new year, we hopeto generate more crew and dinghy sailors fromthese courses and introduce people who havenever sailed into the sport. We are also looking into starng keelboat coursesfor adults for this season on a small scale and ingreater number next season, to do this we needand a number of skippers willing to aend the KeelBoat Instructor course and make their boatsavailable for the courses, if this interests youplease let me know and I will give you moreinformaon.Recently the Department of Transport introduced 2new ski areas to the river the impact on us it thatthere are now water skiing areas on both sides ofthe bay coming right up to the KarrakaaBank. The link aached shows this clearly onmap. The impact for us as sailors is no change, power gives way to sail, however you need to beaware that they may be boats moving quicker withskiers aached. There was consultaon betweenall clubs and Dept of Transport in the lead up to thezoning of new ski areas, the clubs stand was not toincrease the areas of the ski parks, however assome areas of the river are no longer dedicatedskiing zones new areas were found or exisng areasincreased in size.hp://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/mar_LowerSwanWaterSkiArea.pdfDon’t forget that the Christmas Twilight is on the12th Dec, you need to book with the office if youwant to stay back for dinner. I hope that peoplecan come down for a sail on the night, rememberthere are prizes for the best dressed boat andcrews. We are looking at conducng anotherDiscover Sailing open day in the new year, once wehave confirmed a date we will let everyone know soyou can invite people down for a quite sail and theycan enjoy a day at Claremont Yacht Club.Recently it was decided that all members Senior,Crew, Dinghy , junior and country members wouldfrom now on be given a Yachng Australia SilverCard free of charge where previously it cost$25.00. This card provides a level of insurancefor members parcipang in sailing and boangacvies at the club or when sailing away atevents. For more informaon please go to the YAweb site for details hp://www.oamps.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=2428&language=en-AU . This isgreat news for members who are supporng theclub and provides an extra benefit to members. In closing I would like to acknowledge the supportthat the Sailing Commiee has given me to date, their help and work behind the scenes ensures weare able to enjoy our sport each week, with theexcepon of the office staff the whole sailingprogram is held together by a ½ dozen dedicatedpeople, so we are always looking for new faces andideas on the commiee. SAIL COURSES

LATEST DINGHY RESULTSDinghies – Sunday 9th December 2012Fastest – Full Rig Nigel Paul – Vitamin Sea VFastest – Radial Willy Nunn – The Bush Kangaroo1. Wendy Campbell – Two Chances2. Willy Nunn – Tck Tck SkippyJon Van der Peyl – QuickfootLovely Sunday sailing. Thank you to all for organising and aending. I kept thinking whilst sailing, that I couldn’twish to be anywhere else! Only sad point was no dolphins this week!Easterly’s blew most of the morning, starng a bit gusty, but slowly easing off as the morning progressed. My pre race nerves had me tapping Steve’s – Blue Vixen (sorry Steve, definitely my fault) and capsizing! Pleasenote, Ross also had a swim! The pracce starts are a good idea, but with the start boat driing away and thenmotoring off to resecure the anchor, I was a bit confused about the proceedings. However, if all agree, a fewmore pracce starts would be great.Up to the first mark I was actually behind Mal! This was a great thrill, but then I blame the small sail for fallingbehind considerably on the downward runs. Graham overtook me, and then so did everyone – or so it seemed –except for poor old dad. Time to get yourself your own boat Ross!!?Good to see Carlos scking with us. He should have a handicap by now.Thank you to all for the rescue drill last week and for poinng out where the safety equipment is located aroundthe club. I’m embarrassed to say, knowledge of such equipment hadn’t even entered my thoughts, but now that Iknow where the stuff is, I feel I could be more useful in an emergency.Take care everyone,Wendy Campbell.Ps It is possible that I’m not due this 1 st . I note that my closing handicap on 2/12 was 0.8323 and the openinghandicap on 9/12 was 0.7914! If someone is entled to the flag, I will try to prize it off my daughter and return toyou next week.TIDE GAUGEWe have placed a de gauge on the outside of the South West corner of the main jey gatehouse. It is a two metre long wooden beam, with markings from zero to two metres, at 100 mm intervals, and has been bolted to the outside of the gate house, and can be viewed from the car park,or from “E” jey.The markings are related to Low Water Mark Fremantle which is the datum for dal readings andcharts.I have kept this brief and simple, and if anyone has any queries please ask me.Max Brown7/12/2012

DINGHY REPORTJohn Rasmussen reports:The dinghy season is less than half way through andalready there has been a lot of acvity in CYC Dinghies. While Club Opening Day didn’t aract manydinghy sailors (understandably given the weather),we have enjoyed some great sailing in a variety ofcondions with an ever expanding fleet. CYC hostedthe WA Laser Associaon (WALA) Metropolitan Race1 week into the season. The day was a big successwith over 35 Lasers on the water and a great buffetlunch aerwards. Without the presence of the dedicatedvolunteers, this event wouldn’t have beennearly as successful. Thank you to all who helped. We experienced a white out one Sunday about amonth ago when less than half the fleet finished therace. The new sailors soon realised how difficult sailinga Laser in heavy wind can be. Another WALAMetropolitan Race in February and the CommodoresCup and Laser States in March are all features on thedinghy calendar to look forward to in the second halfof the season. On Sunday 2 nd December aer racing had finished, the dinghy secon conducted a safety drill with thehelp of the start and rescue crews. Dean organisedfor Chris Goldacre to demonstrate some recoverymanoeuvres while Travis kindly volunteered to bethe unconscious rescue dummy. There were a fewlaughs along the way but the demonstraon had aserious side. With the dinghy fleet connuing togrow, we want to make sure we have the equipmentand procedures to deal with any foreseeable eventon the water.WA Laser State ChampionshipsOn the March long weekend (2 – 4 March 2013)CYC is hosng the WA Laser State Championships. This event is one of the largest dinghy events inWA and saw 90 boats enter at SoPYC in 2012.There is no CYC keel boat or dinghy sailing scheduledfor this weekend. The Dinghy Commiee arelooking for volunteers to assist with dues suchas:Registraon & marshallingRescue boat supportStart boat assistance (WALA will supply Race Officers)We are also in need of rescue and support boats.Inflatable dinghies are ideal but centre consoles andaluminium dinghies would also be useful. If you areable to assist for any period during the weekend orown a boat you’re willing to lend to us, please let meknow (my details are listed below).Thank you to all the volunteers who help to makedinghy sailing run safely and smoothly. I hope everyonehas a great break and those red backs, legs andjoints get a well-earned rest. Remember that thewind is only going to get lighter further into the season,so don’t put on too much weight before sailingresumes Sunday 13 th January 2013!Happy Christmas!Dean has sourced two second hand 420s which willbe used for sail training in 2013. The Dinghy Commieeconnue to look into buying more dinghiesand geng a juniors sailing programme underway. Ifyou know of any Bics, Opmists, Pacers or otherboats for sale you think might be suitable trainingboats, we’d like to hear from you.
