<strong><strong>St</strong>udents</strong> with Part-Time JobsYou may already have undertaken “workexperience” through part-time jobs. Thisexperience is valuable in developingemployability skills such as reliability,responsibility and independence; however, itis usually only a small number of workenvironments that provide part-time workfor young people, and expectations are quitedifferent to those in full-time work settingsfor adults. Opportunities to developvocational knowledge in other areas areimportant when you are choosing subjects orplanning career paths beyond school. If youwish to pursue a long term career in thesame industry in which you have your parttimework, you will still be encouraged toinvestigate other career pathways to ensureyou are making informed choices for yourfuture. Therefore, regardless of current orpast work experience, all students are stillexpected to participate in the <strong>Work</strong><strong>Experience</strong> Program.How to Choose a <strong>Work</strong> Placement?What industries are appealing to work in?Any ideas? Try these simple things:Talk to parents, family and friendsabout what they do at work, browsethrough the Job Guide (availableonline, or from the Careers Room).The Process in 2011As part of the <strong>Work</strong> <strong>Experience</strong> program, youare encouraged to find your own workplacement. You should begin this processnow. Some employers in Geelong participatein a collective <strong>Work</strong> <strong>Experience</strong> Program andthey prefer contact only through the centralorganisation of this program. Please beaware that only a limited number of positionscome to the <strong>College</strong> through this system. Alist of these employers will be provided onthe Careers/VET Blog <strong>Work</strong> experience page.If you are unable to arrange your ownplacement, though family, friends,networking, or simply the yellow pages, youare urged to seek the support of the <strong>Work</strong><strong>Experience</strong> Coordinator for suggestions andopportunities. This must be done in Term 4before you leave Year 9.
